Finally, experimentation allows us to apply our knowledge and refine our skills. While these phases may vary in duration, the intentionality behind structured learning sets it apart from unstructured learning.
However, after leaving the structured environment of school, maintaining motivation for learning can be challenging. In school, exams and the promise of future opportunities provided external motivation. To counter this post-school learning motivation challenge, the author suggests replacing institutional oversight with the public record of the internet. By intentionally sharing their learning and progress in public spaces, individuals can hold themselves accountable and find motivation in the feedback and support of others.
Beating Perfectionism: Understanding Rules and Flexibility:
Perfectionism is often characterized by excessively high standards and rigid adherence to those standards. The problem lies in the rigidity, not the desire to do great work. To overcome perfectionism, it is crucial to understand the purpose of our rules and be flexible in their application. While rules can guide us towards excellence, blindly adhering to them without considering their effectiveness can hinder our growth.
Instead of rigidly following rules, psychologists suggest adopting contingency-shaped behavior. This approach involves letting our experiences teach us and being open to adjusting our rules based on their effectiveness. Additionally, identifying our values can serve as guideposts when faced with challenging circumstances. Values provide direction and intrinsic motivation, preventing us from feeling lost or rudderless once we achieve our goals.
Awareness and Defusion: Embracing Variability in Behavior:
Becoming aware of our perfectionistic thoughts and separating them from externally imposed rules is a crucial step towards overcoming perfectionism. By recognizing the difference between rules driven by social expectations and rules aligned with our intrinsic desires, we gain the freedom to choose how we behave. Psychologists refer to this process as defusion, where we create space between our thoughts and actions.
