Re-Organizing the World’s Information: Why we need more Boutique…

In today's digital age, information is abundant and readily available. However, the overwhelming amount of information, combined with irrelevant filters and ad-based business models, has made it increasingly difficult for consumers to find valuable and trustworthy content. While the protection of privacy is a concern for some, it is not a compelling enough reason for the majority to leave platforms like Google. Most people are accustomed to accessing information for free and are not willing to pay for it, even if it means having more control over their data.

As the world becomes more saturated with information, there is a growing need to not only organize it but to also prioritize trustworthy information. The original intention of organizing the world's information has shifted towards monetizing clicks and supporting advertisers, rather than prioritizing the search experience for users. This has led to ethically dubious design choices and a significant trust gap between users and these platforms.

Vertical search aggregators can be useful when users know exactly what they are looking for. However, the starting point for most users is not knowing what they want, which presents an opportunity for better discovery and curation along the search process. The focus should shift from curating content to curating the structure of content feeds. People should be able to find content on their terms, rather than being limited by when curators decide to publish.

Ben Evans once said, "All curation grows until it requires search, and all search grows until it requires curation." This statement highlights the need for more individuals and organizations devoted to filtering, organizing, curating, and indexing the vast amount of information being created. Curation sites often start with high-quality recommendations but struggle to maintain the same level of quality as they grow. This is when vertical search aggregators like Yelp become more popular due to their increased utility.

However, the ad-driven model of these platforms leads to competition between advertisers and content producers for attention. This often results in these sites feeling more like marketing blogs than curated sources of information. Subscription-based models are not always the solution, especially when the use cases are not frequent enough. Token-based business models, on the other hand, show promise by giving ownership to stakeholders and allowing subscribers to benefit from future upside.

In Simon Sinek's TED Talk, "How Great Leaders Inspire Action," he explores the importance of communicating from the inside out. Inspired leaders and organizations think, act, and communicate from their core beliefs. People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it. When we communicate from our core beliefs, we tap into the part of the brain that controls behavior, leading to gut decisions.

The goal of businesses should not be to do business with everyone who needs their product or service. Instead, the goal should be to do business with people who believe what they believe. This aligns with the story of Orville and Wilbur Wright, who were driven by a cause, a purpose, and a belief. They believed that if they could invent a flying machine, it would change the world.

To achieve mass-market success or acceptance of an idea, a tipping point of 15 to 18 percent market penetration must be reached. This is when the system tips and the idea gains momentum. What a business does serves as proof of what it believes. People and organizations follow leaders not because they have to, but because they want to. Those who start with "why" have the ability to inspire others or find inspiration themselves.

In conclusion, the overwhelming amount of information in today's world requires better organization and curation. Platforms that prioritize advertisers over users' search experience create trust gaps and fail to provide valuable content. The shift from curating content to curating the structure of content feeds can greatly improve the user experience. Additionally, businesses should focus on communicating their core beliefs to connect with their target audience. Token-based business models and reaching the tipping point of market penetration can also contribute to success. By implementing these actionable strategies, we can navigate the abundant world of information and find valuable, trustworthy content.
