Increasing access to data improves the technology (figure 3), and existing demand allows for the introduction of an integrative business model, as seen in the case of Airbnb (figure 4).
Critical mass is a crucial factor in network effects. It refers to the number of participants or the size of the network needed for the platform to generate its own growth. Achieving critical mass requires a value perception that grows faster than the network's growth. For example, OpenTable found that they needed about 25 restaurants in a city to attract guests and use their booking service. Similarly, Airbnb discovered that having approximately 300 homes per city was the magic number for their platform's success.
Different factors impact network effects, such as the supply's commoditization or differentiation. In a commoditized supply marketplace, the value reaches a plateau despite adding more depth to the offering. Asymmetry of supply and demand also plays a role, with some networks having asymmetric weights. Apple's strategy with the iPhone is an example of subsidizing the supply side to attract more users before opening access to developers.
Flexibility of location, whether locally or globally bound, affects liquidity in a network. Local networks face challenges in achieving liquidity on a global scale. Strategies like the "bowling pin" approach, gradually launching different cohort-networks and extending to others, can help achieve liquidity. Additionally, the choice between single tenancy or multi-tenancy impacts network effects. Commoditized offerings often lead to single tenancy behavior.
Transaction frequency and lifetime are key properties of networks. Multi-sided systems may have varying transaction frequencies depending on the relationships within the network. Liquidity and critical mass can be achieved separately in market-networks, considering different relationships. Asymmetry and high frequency on the supply side contribute to anticipating liquidity but can also lead to asymptotic plateauing of perceived value.
