It is essential to have a value perception that grows faster than the network's growth. For example, OpenTable discovered that it needed approximately 25 restaurants per city to attract guests and use the booking service. On the other hand, Airbnb found that 300 homes per city were the magic number for its quasi-magical growth.
Commoditized or Differentiated Supply:
The type of supply within a network also influences the network effects. A commoditized supply marketplace often reaches a plateau in value, even with the addition of more depth to the offering. On the contrary, a differentiated supply can continue to generate value as it caters to specific needs and preferences.

Public or regulated services that are platformized by institutional players often enforce multi-tenancy to ensure fair access and competition.
Transaction Frequency and Lifetime:
The frequency of transactions within a network varies depending on the relationships involved. Multi-sided systems may have different transaction frequencies depending on the relationship and the sides of the system. Different relationships within a network may contribute to liquidity and critical mass differently. Local networks, single tenancy, and high transaction frequencies on the supply side tend to help anticipate liquidity but may also contribute to plateauing perceived value.

In contrast to network effects, social learning emphasizes the importance of connections and continuous learning for innovation and growth. Loose ties and a wide network are necessary to gather diverse points of view and foster innovation. Cooperation, where individuals freely share without direct reciprocation, is the key in loose networks. Collaboration, on the other hand, involves working together toward a common objective.
