"The Next Chapter of Readwise: Our Own Reading App and the Importance of Retention in App Usage"

In a world where technology has disrupted traditional publishing and distribution models, the experience of reading itself has remained largely unchanged. We spend hours reading books, only to forget nearly everything we understood in the moment. This begs the question - why doesn't software help us internalize the things we read and apply them to our personal and work lives?

At Readwise, our mission is to improve the practice of reading through software by an order of magnitude. We believe that reading for betterment goes beyond pleasure and serves a deeper purpose - expanding knowledge, becoming a more eloquent speaker, exploring the meaning of life, and internalizing information for work. To address this, we have built our own fully-integrated reading app.

The decision to build our own reading app was driven by the demand from our users. While traditional publishing and physical books still dominate the market, the era of reading technology seemed promising when Kindle, Pocket, Instapaper, Google Reader, and Goodreads emerged. However, looking back, it's clear that this era focused more on controlling the distribution of content rather than advancing the practice of reading itself.

Readwise initially focused on addressing the problem of retention - the act of remembering what we read. We recognized that if we want to get more out of reading, we first need to forget less. Our reading app is built on a local-first foundation, allowing fast and comprehensive searches of your entire library of books, articles, annotations, and highlights. Whether you remember just a single word or are offline, our app ensures you can find what you're looking for.

But retention is not the only challenge in the realm of technology. Content overload is a common problem, where we save more things than we can actually consume. Our inboxes become overflowing, turning our digital gardens into digital graveyards. To conquer content overload, our reading app incorporates highlighting as a core feature. We believe that the best way to read between the lines is to write between the lines. Highlighting allows us to engage with the text and extract meaningful insights.

Unlike other reading apps, we do not aim to make reading a social experience or introduce an internet-scale annotation layer. Our focus is on maximizing the potential of single-player mode. As toolmakers, we see immense opportunities in enhancing the individual reading experience, which can hardly be fathomed in multiplayer mode.

In a separate realm of technology, Android and iOS app usage and retention rates vary significantly. Long-term retention rates pose challenges for both operating systems. Android users tend to be loyal to entertainment and travel apps, while social media apps score highest for retention on iOS. Marketers, therefore, need to develop effective strategies to retain users and provide a great user experience to keep them coming back.

Retaining users in the long term is crucial, and this holds true for both iOS and Android. Direct marketing channels, such as SMS, have high retention rates as they engage consumers with non-app properties, like discount offers. Additionally, the high adoption of QR codes on Android can be attributed to their higher usage rates in Asia.

To conclude, the next chapter of Readwise involves the development of our own reading app, aiming to revolutionize the practice of reading through software. By addressing the problems of retention and content overload, and by incorporating highlighting as a core feature, we strive to enhance the reading experience for individuals. In the realm of app usage, understanding and improving retention rates is vital for marketers, who should focus on providing a great user experience and developing effective strategies. Reading and app usage may seem distinct, but both require careful attention to retention in order to maximize their potential.

Actionable advice:

  1. Prioritize retention: Whether you're building a reading app or developing a mobile app, prioritize retention by addressing the problems users face in remembering and internalizing information.
  2. Enhance the user experience: Invest in creating a seamless and enjoyable user experience to keep users engaged and coming back for more.
  3. Develop effective retention strategies: Understand your target audience and develop strategies that cater to their specific needs and interests. This could include personalized content recommendations, exclusive offers, or interactive features that encourage active participation.

By combining the need for a better reading experience with the challenges of app retention, we can create innovative solutions that empower users and maximize the impact of both reading and app usage.
