"One Question to Ask Yourself to Know Your Future: Connecting Time, Values, and North Star Metrics"

The German writer and philosopher Goethe believed that he could predict someone's future based on one simple fact: how they spend their time. He argued that by understanding how a person spends their time, one can determine what might become of them. This idea holds true in our modern world as well. If we take a closer look at how we spend our time, we can gain insights into our future.

One way to draw up a draft of who we want to be is by focusing on the characteristics we want to embody, also known as our values. By listing our values and the activities that align with them, we can identify any gaps between how we currently spend our time and who we aspire to become. Unfortunately, many people neglect to make time for their values, which can hinder their personal growth and development.

To ensure that our ideal future becomes a reality, we must take control of our time and attention. One effective technique for managing time and attention is timeboxing. Timeboxing involves reserving specific periods in our calendar for the activities that align with our values and contribute to our desired future. By dedicating time to these activities in advance, we can prioritize them and ensure that they receive the attention they deserve.

In addition to managing our time, it is important to identify our North Star Metric – the key measure that will accelerate our progress towards our goals. There are six categories of North Star Metrics: revenue, customer growth, consumption growth, engagement growth, growth efficiency, and user experience. Different types of companies may focus on different metrics based on their business models and goals.

For marketplaces and platforms like Airbnb, Uber, Lyft, and Cameo, the most common North Star Metric is consumption growth, which is measured by the volume of transactions. On the other hand, paid-growth driven businesses often prioritize growth efficiency, which measures the efficiency of spending versus revenue generation. Freemium team-based B2B products typically focus on engagement and/or customer growth, while UGC subscription-based products prioritize consumption. Ad-driven businesses focus on engagement, and consumer subscription products may prioritize engagement or customer growth. Products that differentiate on experience, such as Robinhood, Superhuman, and Duolingo, have unique metrics like NPS or learning competency.

To determine your North Star Metric, it is important to consider the type of company you have and the goals you want to achieve. By focusing on the metric that aligns with your business model and growth strategy, you can drive meaningful progress towards your goals. It is also crucial to break down your North Star Metric into actionable input metrics. These input metrics are the day-to-day efforts that contribute to the overall output metric. By investing in and optimizing these input metrics, you can have a direct impact on your North Star Metric.

In the early stages of a company, before achieving product-market fit, the primary question to ask is, "Am I building something people want?" This question should guide your focus and help you identify the most important metrics to track and improve. By continuously evaluating and adjusting your approach based on customer feedback and market demands, you can ensure that you are building a product or service that meets the needs and desires of your target audience.

In conclusion, understanding how we spend our time and aligning our actions with our values is crucial for shaping our future. By implementing timeboxing and prioritizing activities that contribute to our desired future, we can take control of our time and attention. Additionally, identifying and focusing on the right North Star Metric for our business can accelerate our progress towards our goals. By breaking down our North Star Metric into actionable input metrics and continuously evaluating and adjusting our approach, we can drive meaningful results. So, ask yourself the question, "Am I building something people want?" and take the necessary steps to shape your future.
