"First Principles: The Building Blocks of True Knowledge"

In every systematic inquiry (methodos) where there are first principles, or causes, or elements, knowledge and science result from acquiring knowledge of these First-principles thinking is one of the best ways to reverse-engineer complicated problems and unleash creative possibility. Sometimes called “reasoning from first principles,” the idea is to break down complicated problems into basic elements and then reassemble them from the ground up. It allows them to cut through the fog of shoddy reasoning and inadequate analogies to see opportunities that others miss.

“I don’t know what’s the matter with people: they don’t learn by understanding; they learn by some other way—by rote or something. Their knowledge is so fragile!” — Richard Feynman

The difference between reasoning by first principles and reasoning by analogy is like the difference between being a chef and being a cook. If the cook lost the recipe, he’d be screwed. The chef, on the other hand, understands the flavor profiles and combinations at such a fundamental level that he doesn’t even use a recipe. He has real knowledge as opposed to know-how.

If we never learn to take something apart, test the assumptions, and reconstruct it, we end up trapped in what other people tell us — trapped in the way things have always been done. When it comes down to it, everything that is not a law of nature is just a shared belief. Money is a shared belief. So is a border. So are bitcoins.

After three “whys,” though, you often find yourself on the other end of some version of “we can take this offline.” “Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge.” — Carl Sagan.

"Consider Post-PMF before PMF"

A Brand is a promise. The key factor is that the post-PMF strategy can’t be easily implemented once we start expanding the business. Most of the cases if the PMF is proven, sooner or later, competitors emerge and fight with each other. In this war, we need to build strong defensibility against others so that we can run the business more safely.

Evolution of technologies is very fast to be commoditized, especially in IT or software industries including AI, IoT, and Blockchain. If the competition happens, prices cannot be maintained. the “proprietary technology” is 10x performance improvement over the closest substitute. If the technology itself cannot stand out, it’s a good alternative to think about the 10x improvement in UX. It would be a great alternative if the companies can embed the technology to a deep level of a users’ lives, or business operations.

1 Proprietary Technology

One actionable advice is to focus on developing proprietary technology that offers a significant performance improvement over existing substitutes. By creating something unique and valuable, you can differentiate your product or service from competitors and establish a strong position in the market.

2 Network Effects

Another strategy to consider is leveraging network effects. By building a platform or ecosystem that becomes more valuable as more users join, you can create a strong barrier to entry for competitors. Examples of successful companies using network effects include social media platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn.

3 Economies of Scale

Building economies of scale is another way to create defensibility. By increasing production volume and spreading fixed costs over a larger base, you can lower your per-unit costs and price your products or services competitively. This makes it harder for competitors to match your pricing while still maintaining profitability.

4 Build a strong brand

Finally, building a strong brand can provide a competitive advantage. A strong brand creates trust and loyalty among customers, making it harder for competitors to sway them. Investing in brand building activities such as marketing, customer experience, and reputation management can help establish a strong brand presence in the market.

In conclusion, by applying first-principles thinking and considering post-PMF strategies, businesses can find innovative solutions and establish defensibility in a competitive market. Developing proprietary technology, leveraging network effects, building economies of scale, and investing in brand building are actionable steps businesses can take to create a lasting competitive advantage. By understanding the fundamental building blocks of knowledge and implementing strategic approaches, businesses can navigate challenges, stand out from the competition, and achieve long-term success.
