The Power of Reading and the Rise of AI Writing Tools

"Reading". Whether it’s news, tweets, books, or any other form of written word, reading remains the most efficient way of consuming and capturing information. And information is the most valuable asset in the world. The act of reading allows us to expand our knowledge, broaden our perspectives, and delve into different worlds. It is a gateway to endless possibilities.

In today's digital era, reading has become more accessible than ever. We have a plethora of devices at our disposal to indulge in our reading habits. Personally, I find myself reading on various devices throughout the day. In the morning and evenings at home, I tend to read on my iPad Air. I recently got the new variety, and I must say, it has enhanced my reading experience. In the afternoon, I switch to my iPhone, taking advantage of its portability. And at night, I snuggle up with my Kindle, enjoying the comforting feel of a physical book. This diverse range of devices caters to my reading needs at different times of the day.

While reading has always been a fundamental skill, the way we consume and interact with written content has evolved. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing, AI writing tools have emerged as powerful tools in the field of education. One such tool that has gained significant attention is ChatGPT. However, controversy surrounds its usage, with claims of it being a form of cheating.

Sally Brandon, a communications lecturer at Melbourne’s Deakin University, conducted a study where she applied bot detection technology to 54 essays she marked over the summer. Surprisingly, she found that 10 of the essays had “significant, detectable bot assistance.” This highlights the growing prevalence of AI writing tools in academic settings. In fact, the use of such tools has become so widespread that some schools in the US have even banned the URL to prevent students from accessing them.

However, it is essential to clarify the purpose of these AI writing tools. ChatGPT, for instance, is not a database that provides ready-made answers. Instead, it generates new prose by learning from patterns and characteristics it has been taught. It is not infallible and can still make mistakes, have gaps in its knowledge, and exhibit bias. It is crucial to view these tools as efficiency and learning aids rather than as a means of cheating.

Educators and institutions should take a proactive approach to address the ethical concerns surrounding AI writing tools. Instead of banning their usage outright, the focus should be on educating students on the responsible and ethical use of these tools. By fostering awareness, knowledge, and skills in their students, educators can ensure that graduates become digitally fluent citizens and employees.

Universities have been aware of students using AI writing tools for some time now. This is because professionals in various industries have also been utilizing these tools. It is inevitable that people will find ways to cheat, regardless of the technology available to them. Cheating has been prevalent since the very first forms of examination were invented in China in 600 AD, and it continues to persist today.

In conclusion, reading remains a powerful tool for acquiring knowledge and expanding our horizons. The advent of AI writing tools like ChatGPT has sparked debates about their ethical implications in educational settings. However, it is crucial to view these tools as aids for efficiency and learning rather than as a form of cheating. By embracing these tools responsibly and educating students on their ethical use, we can ensure that they graduate as digitally fluent citizens. As we continue to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of technology, it is essential to strike a balance between leveraging its benefits and upholding ethical standards.

Actionable Advice:

  1. Embrace the power of reading: Make reading a daily habit and explore various genres to broaden your knowledge and perspectives.
  2. Utilize AI writing tools responsibly: If you choose to use AI writing tools, ensure that you understand their limitations and use them as aids for efficiency rather than relying solely on them.
  3. Educate on ethical usage: Whether you are an educator or a student, prioritize education on the responsible and ethical use of AI writing tools to foster digital fluency and ethical practices.

Remember, the future lies in our ability to adapt and utilize technology responsibly, harnessing its power for personal growth and societal advancement.
