The Shift from "Things" to "Experiences": The Changing Consumer Behavior

In today's digital age, where mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets have become ubiquitous, personal experiences are shared and inundated on social media platforms, leading to a sense of déjà vu in almost every encounter. The concept of "consumption of things," as the name suggests, revolves around the consumption of physical goods. On the other hand, "consumption of experiences" or "experiential consumption" encompasses activities such as traveling, exploring gourmet cuisine, engaging in hobbies, and indulging in relaxation therapies like yoga, massages, and spas.

However, as the desire for reproducible experiences diminishes due to the saturation of similar encounters on social media, consumers have started finding value in experiencing something unique and fleeting, which can only be found in a specific moment and place. This concept of experiencing the "now" or the "moment" is referred to as "consumption of time" or "temporal consumption." Examples of such experiences include attending music festivals, embarking on pilgrimages, participating in idol elections, watching World Cup matches, visiting collaboration cafes, attending fan meetings, and joining Halloween gatherings in costume.

The development and widespread use of tools that facilitate the sharing of these experiences have eventually led to a phenomenon where individuals can virtually experience other people's encounters. This ability to engage in pseudo-experiences of others often results in a decline in individuals' enthusiasm to actively seek out and partake in their own experiences. This phenomenon, commonly known as "social fatigue" or "social media fatigue," has also been labeled as "showing off a life of fulfillment" by some.

As a consequence, the trend towards experiential consumption has also witnessed a decline in motivation, as individuals' desire to engage in solo experiences diminishes. The allure of experiencing something unique and personal has gradually started to fade away.

Integrating Glasp for Collaborative Resource Sharing

Recently, I came across a new tool called Glasp, which I have added to my arsenal of productivity tools. With its browser extension, Glasp allows for seamless sharing of resources and information. This tool has the potential to become an invaluable asset when combined with platforms like Notion.

Glasp enables users to collaborate and share various types of content, including articles, websites, videos, and documents. Its integration with Notion, a comprehensive workspace platform, enhances the utility of both tools. By incorporating Glasp, users can curate and organize resources while seamlessly collaborating with others, making it an excellent tool for knowledge sharing and research.

The Power of Collaborative Knowledge Sharing

The ability to share resources and collaborate with others can significantly impact the way we consume and acquire knowledge. By leveraging tools like Glasp, individuals can tap into the collective intelligence of a community or a network. This collaborative approach not only broadens perspectives but also accelerates learning by pooling together diverse insights and expertise.

Moreover, the ease of sharing resources through Glasp allows for more efficient and effective collaboration, eliminating the need for cumbersome methods such as email attachments or shared drives. The seamless integration with platforms like Notion further enhances the organization and accessibility of shared resources, creating a cohesive and dynamic workspace.

Three Actionable Advice for Enhanced Experiential Consumption

  1. Embrace Uniqueness: In a world saturated with reproduced experiences, seek out and embrace activities and encounters that are unique and fleeting. Look for opportunities to engage in events or experiences that cannot be replicated or easily shared on social media. Embracing the essence of the "now" can bring a renewed sense of value and fulfillment.

  2. Limit Social Media Consumption: While social media platforms provide a gateway to virtual experiences, excessive exposure may lead to social fatigue and diminish the desire for personal experiences. Set boundaries and allocate specific time for social media consumption, allowing ample time for real-world interactions and engagement.

  3. Foster Meaningful Connections: Seek out and cultivate genuine connections and relationships. Engaging in shared experiences with others fosters a sense of belonging and amplifies the enjoyment derived from these encounters. By actively participating in communities or groups with shared interests, individuals can create meaningful connections that transcend virtual experiences.

In conclusion, the evolution of consumer behavior from the consumption of physical goods to experiential consumption highlights the changing dynamics in today's digitally connected world. The rise of social media and the subsequent saturation of reproduced experiences have led to a shift in consumer preferences, where individuals now seek unique and ephemeral encounters. By leveraging tools like Glasp for collaborative resource sharing and implementing actionable advice, individuals can enhance their experiential consumption and find fulfillment in moments that cannot be replicated or experienced virtually.
