The Creator Economy Needs a Middle Class: Gamifying Success and Upward Mobility

Launching a new platform, he said, was like starting a new country: Getting users to move from an established network that had an ossified economy and social classes to a new network requires the possibility of success the new social network had to create upward mobility for all users, to “make sure there’s a middle class coming up. The current creator landscape more closely resembles an economy in which wealth is concentrated at the top. The sustainability of nations and the defensibility of platforms is better when wealth isn’t concentrated in the top 1%. In the real world, a healthy middle class is critical for promoting societal trust, providing a stable source of demand for products and services, and driving innovation.

The gamification framework called Octalysis, designed as an octagon shape with 8 Core Drives representing each side, offers insights into how platforms can create a more equitable creator ecosystem and foster upward mobility. Human-Focused Design, a key principle of gamification, optimizes for the feelings, motivations, and engagement of users.

One of the Core Drives within Octalysis is Epic Meaning & Calling, where a player believes that they are doing something greater than themselves or have been "chosen" to do something. This drive aligns with the need for creator platforms to provide paths for upward mobility and democratize opportunities to succeed. When users feel a sense of purpose and meaning in their creative endeavors, they are more likely to invest time and effort into honing their skills and developing their content.

Another Core Drive, Development & Accomplishment, taps into the internal drive of making progress, developing skills, and overcoming challenges. This drive aligns with the idea of providing capital investment to up-and-coming creators. Some creator verticals require upfront capital investment or capital to unlock the next level of growth, and providing funding can lower barriers to entry and enable creators to achieve financial security.

Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback, another Core Drive, emphasizes the importance of allowing users to engage in a creative process, receive feedback, and see the results of their creativity. Creator platforms can facilitate this by offering collaboration and community-building features, allowing creators to connect with one another for emotional support, collaboration, and education.

To create a more equitable creator ecosystem, platforms can also serve heterogeneity in user preferences and empower niche creators. By directing users to content types where there is greater appeal in experiencing a wide array of content, platforms can provide opportunities for a diverse array of creators to succeed.

In addition to these insights from the Octalysis framework, there are several actionable advice that creator platforms can implement:

  1. Focus on content types with lower replay value: Categories with high replay value, like music and game platforms, are most susceptible to concentration among a few mega-hits. By diversifying content types and promoting a wide range of creators, platforms can create more opportunities for upward mobility.

  2. Recommend content algorithmically with an element of randomness: When algorithms do the searching for users, there are more opportunities for niches to thrive. Bringing a diversity of videos into users' feeds gives them additional opportunities to stumble upon new content categories, discover new creators, and experience new perspectives and ideas.

  3. Provide creator education and training: Rapid technological progress has led to a wage premium for skilled workers, while low-skill workers struggle to even find a job given increasing offshoring and automation. By offering education and training programs, platforms can empower creators to develop new skills and adapt to the changing demands of the creator economy.

By incorporating these actionable advice and insights from gamification principles, creator platforms can foster a middle class within the creator economy. By providing opportunities for upward mobility, democratizing access to success, and supporting creators in their journey, platforms can create a more sustainable and equitable ecosystem. Societies and platforms flourish when there is a path for everyone to have upward mobility, achieve financial security, and learn and grow.
