Building a Better Mousetrap: Tools and Processes for Selling A Company
In the world of business, selling a company is a complex and high-stakes process. It involves a multitude of tasks, from document management to request tracking, and requires effective internal and external collaboration. In a recent study conducted through interviews with industry professionals, we sought to uncover the pain points and challenges that arise during the sales process. Our analysis, based on 19 interviews, revealed several common themes that can hinder efficiency and productivity.
One recurring issue that participants highlighted was the misalignment between the language used in the tools and their mental models. This discrepancy often led to confusion and a lack of understanding, impeding the smooth flow of information. It became apparent that companies engaged in sell-side diligence often prioritize activities that support their bottom line rather than focusing on best practices for data organization. As one participant noted, "Early days companies don't even know they are supposed to keep track of it. It doesn't even occur to them... They are all busy running around trying to build a company."
Another challenge identified in our study was the difficulty in identifying documents that are responsive to specific information requests. Participants expressed the desire for tools that could easily filter and find relevant documents, as this would greatly reduce the manual effort required. While some participants were aware of the option to leverage machine learning models to extract specified concepts from documents, most still resorted to using text queries. This approach often required the setup of multiple conditions and could result in missing important documents.
To address these pain points and improve the efficiency of the sales process, we propose the development of a tool for request management. This tool would allow users to create filters that automatically identify relevant documents based on desired criteria. For example, users could set filters to find employee contracts where the base pay is over $150,000. While our users were generally able to accomplish this task, the terminology used in the tool proved to be a consistent source of frustration due to its incompatibility with their mental models.
Based on our findings, we believe that the most practical area for reducing human effort lies in improving the identification of documents that meet specific information requests. This low-hanging fruit can be achieved through the development of intuitive and user-oriented filters. Additionally, the incorporation of machine learning models to extract concepts from documents could further enhance the efficiency of this process.
In conclusion, the process of selling a company is complex and demanding, requiring effective document management, request tracking, and collaboration. By addressing the pain points identified in our study, we can build a better mousetrap for selling companies. Here are three actionable pieces of advice to improve the sales process:
-
Prioritize data organization: Establish best practices for data organization early on in a company's lifecycle. This will ensure that crucial information is easily accessible when the time comes to sell the company.
-
Develop user-oriented tools: When creating tools for request management and document identification, prioritize compatibility with users' mental models. This will minimize confusion and increase efficiency.
-
Incorporate machine learning: Leverage machine learning models to automatically extract relevant concepts from documents, reducing the manual effort required to find specific information.
By implementing these actionable steps, companies can streamline the sales process and improve their chances of achieving a successful sale. Selling a company may be a challenging endeavor, but with the right tools and processes in place, it can be a more efficient and rewarding experience for all parties involved.
