What the Science Actually Shows

In 2003, Eleanor Maguire's team at University College London scanned ten of the world's top memory performers, people who compete at events like the World Memory Championships, and compared them to matched controls. What Palaces Are Good For, and What They're Not

It's built for ordered, discrete information: lists, sequences, numbered steps, vocabulary, names and faces, speeches, the order of a deck of cards, the bones of the hand, the presidents in order, the amendments to a constitution. Anything that is a set of facts you must reproduce exactly and in order is a natural fit.
It's a weak tool for conceptual understanding. A memory palace can store the definition of compound interest, but it won't teach you to reason about compound interest. It can hold the steps of a proof, but it won't give you the intuition for why the proof works. Memorizing is not understanding, and no amount of vivid imagery closes that gap.
