Lesser Gods: AI Creativity, Neuroscience, and the Future of Work

Creativity is a fundamental aspect of human existence. It is the ability to combine existing ideas, cultural forms, and technologies in new ways through trial and error. As humans, we understand the meaning of each component we combine, but can the same be said for AI?

AI tools like Midjourney may produce aesthetically appealing works, but they lack the inherent understanding that humans possess. The difference between real agency and the appearance of intention is evident. The "spontaneous insight" associated with creativity is a result of two types of thinking - associative and analytic. Real-life requires the integration of both processes.

Creativity, as we define it, emerges from the interaction of various processes happening simultaneously and interacting with the environment. This emergence is what creates something more than the sum of its parts. However, it is human beings who attribute the "aha!" moment of insight, not AI. There is an inherent uncertainty about our place in relation to AI, as we understand the complexity and meaning of our experiences and subconsciously combine them to generate new ideas, solutions, and strategies.

The art of being alive is intimately connected to creativity. It is a relational process between ourselves and the rest of reality. True creativity is a dance between subject and object, where the individual brings their unique perspective to the world through various forms of expression. The creative process is a way for us to connect with the world and respond to it authentically.

In our pursuit of creativity, we must recognize the importance of the relationship between ourselves and the world around us. True creativity cannot be mimicked or commodified. It is a process that requires freedom from constraints. Many artists throughout history have found ways to fund their creativity while maintaining its purity. They understood that their job was a means to an end, a way to support their true creative endeavors.

However, the rise of AI poses a threat to the authenticity of creativity. The market forces that seek to profit from creativity often limit and constrain it, reducing it to a mere product. This commodification of creativity diminishes its essence and stifles its potential. We must guard against this tendency and preserve the mysterious, temporary, and unknowable nature of true creativity.

Quality is another aspect of creativity that we must uphold. True creativity cannot be reduced to a formula or a set of rules. It is a divine spark that comes from within. The Gnostics believed in a feminine goddess named Sophia, who represented true divinity and creativity. They saw lesser gods, known as archons, as cold, machine-like entities lacking self-directive capacity. These archons are akin to our current AI tools - they mimic novelty but lack the sacred spark of cosmic creativity.

As AI advances, we must reflect on what it means to be human and what sets us apart in terms of creativity. We must delve deep into our agency, discernment, and humanity to understand the true essence of creativity. AI may possess computational power, but it lacks the depth of human experience and the ability to recognize failure, which is vital for creative problem-solving.

In conclusion, as we navigate the future of work in the age of AI, we must actively shape the role of creativity. Three actionable pieces of advice emerge from our exploration:

  1. Preserve the authenticity of creativity: Resist the commodification of creativity and allow it to flourish free from constraints. Support artists and creators in their pursuit of true creativity.

  2. Embrace failure as a part of the creative process: Failure is an essential aspect of creative problem-solving. Encourage a culture that accepts and learns from failure, allowing for greater innovation and novel solutions.

  3. Foster the unique human qualities of creativity: Recognize and nurture the human capacity for agency, discernment, and deep connection with the world. Embrace the mystery and unknowable nature of creativity, preserving its true essence.

As AI continues to evolve, we must collectively decide what role we want creativity to play in our lives and in society. By understanding and appreciating the unique qualities of human creativity, we can shape a future that embraces the best of both human and artificial intelligence.
