Pursuing Happiness from Opposite Ends of the Spectrum
From Slavery in North Korea to Jeff Bezos’s Gulfstream, the concept of happiness is something that is sought after by people from all walks of life. Happiness, after all, is something that is universal and can be found in different forms and ways. What makes one person happy, however, may not be the same for another. This begs the question, what truly makes people happy?
For those who have experienced extreme hardship, like the survivors of slavery in North Korea, happiness may come from simply being able to escape and live a life of freedom. The lack of basic human rights and living conditions in North Korea is something that most of us may never even begin to comprehend. For these individuals, happiness may come from the simple pleasures of life that many of us take for granted, such as being able to eat a meal without fear of punishment or being able to pursue their own passions and dreams.
On the other end of the spectrum, we have individuals like Jeff Bezos who have all the resources and wealth to pursue anything they desire. For someone like Bezos, happiness may come from being able to constantly innovate and push the boundaries of what is possible. The thrill of creating something new and being able to change the world may be what drives him and brings him happiness.
Despite coming from opposite ends of the spectrum, the pursuit of happiness is something that both groups have in common. It is a universal desire that is present in all of us. For those who have experienced hardship, the pursuit of happiness may be more grounded in the present moment, while for those who have achieved great success, the pursuit of happiness may be more focused on future goals and aspirations.
In the end, what makes people happy is subjective and varies from person to person. It can be found in the simplest of things or the grandest of achievements. What is important is that we each take the time to reflect on what truly makes us happy and strive towards that in our own way. After all, life is too short to not pursue what brings us joy and fulfillment.
