Commitment means choosing a branch deeply enough to produce results. Confinement means mistaking the chosen branch for the whole tree.

A useful life therefore has two movements. First, go deep enough to develop real capability. Second, periodically return to the trunk and ask what else that capability could serve.

Depth gives you power. Returning to first principles gives that power somewhere new to go.

This also explains why people with broad experience often become more, rather than less, creative. Their knowledge is not merely wide. It is connected at the level of principles. They can move between domains because they recognize the same underlying dynamics wearing different costumes.

A Practical Method for Creating Cognitive Abundance

The idea becomes useful when translated into a repeatable practice. The following method can be applied to a subject, a career problem, or a difficult personal decision.

1. Name the apparent limit

State the scarcity clearly. “I do not have enough time,” “I am not qualified,” “There are no opportunities,” or “I do not know enough.” Vague scarcity expands to fill the mind. Precise scarcity can be examined.

If time is the problem, specify whether the shortage concerns hours, energy, focus, or coordination. If qualification is the problem, identify the missing credential, skill, proof, or relationship. Precision often reveals that the original limit was a bundle of different problems.

It can lose a familiar route without losing all direction. It can commit deeply without treating commitment as a prison. Most importantly, it can look at a limit and ask what kind of tree might grow from it.

Perhaps abundance is not the feeling that every door is open. Perhaps it is the recognition that you are not identical to any one door, role, possession, or outcome. You are the living structure that can learn, connect, and grow new branches.

The question is not whether you have enough. It is whether you can still see what your existing understanding makes possible.
