Continuity makes the eye follow a line, edge, or directional flow. Similarity groups elements that share a color, shape, or typographic treatment. Common region places items inside a boundary so they read as a unit. Connectedness makes the relationship even more explicit through a line, shared background, or direct visual link.
White space determines the tempo of that journey. Tight intervals accelerate the reading of related details. Larger intervals create a pause and announce a change of subject. A page with carefully varied intervals can make hierarchy felt before it is understood.

The real design problem is managing inference
The most useful way to combine Gestalt principles and white space is to stop thinking of them as a collection of visual rules. They are tools for managing inference under limited attention.
Every viewer arrives with finite perceptual capacity. The visual system simplifies complexity, seeks stable forms, and uses prior knowledge to fill gaps. This is efficient, but it also makes perception vulnerable to misleading grouping. A label may appear to belong to the wrong image because it is too close. A decorative border may accidentally join unrelated content. A dramatic background may become the figure and push the actual message into the ground.
Design quality therefore depends on the distance between the structure the designer intends and the structure the viewer is likely to perceive. Call this distance the inference gap.
A small inference gap means the design does not require much correction. The viewer immediately understands what belongs together, what deserves attention, and what action follows. A large inference gap forces the viewer to pause, test interpretations, and recover from mistaken groupings. Sometimes that ambiguity is intentional, as in a visual puzzle or double meaning. Often it is simply friction.
You can reduce the inference gap with three forms of control:
