The Importance of Delighting Customers and Achieving Profitability in Startups

In the world of startups, there are two primary goals: delight customers and achieve profitability. In order to do this, product leaders, advisors, and board members need to brainstorm ideas that answer three important questions. First, how will a product delight customers? Second, what will make the product hard to copy? And third, what business model experiments are required to build a profitable business?

To delight customers, it is important to identify the product's "delighters," or the features that set it apart from competitors. These may include hard-to-copy advantages such as brand, network effects, economies of scale, and unique technology. By leveraging these advantages, startups can create a product that is impossible for competitors to match. Additionally, startups must experiment with different prices and business models over the life of the product to generate margin and achieve profitability.

While many Silicon Valley startups focus solely on growth and sacrifice profitability, achieving profitability early can actually be a more sustainable path. To do this, startups need to focus on revenue, by creating a pricing model and identifying the prices for their product. It is important to survey competitors' and adjacent products' plans in the space and construct a simplified version that prospects will be familiar with. Startups can also offer a higher-tier plan with priority support and/or an SLA as initial benefits to encourage customers to self-select into a more expensive plan.

To further increase profitability, startups can offer a discounted annual plan with an upfront payment to increase cash flow while reducing churn. However, it is important not to pay vendors upfront for annual plans, as startups need the flexibility to switch vendors as their needs change. Additionally, startups can hire contractors before employees to work with top talent while being able to afford them. Hiring senior individual contributors can also help slow the growth of salaries and costs.

Ultimately, startups need to think beyond short-term growth and instead invest on a longer horizon to achieve sustainability and profitability. By accurately identifying the true value of their product and features, startups can segment across different customers to achieve the best pricing. By following these guidelines, startups can both delight customers and achieve profitability, leading to long-term success.
