How to Achieve Your Ideal Future

German writer and philosopher Goethe believed that one simple fact can predict someone's future: how they spend their time. This statement emphasizes the importance of time management in achieving our goals. To make our ideal future come to fruition, we need to turn our values into time. Timeboxing, a time and attention management technique, helps us do this by reserving specific periods in our calendar for activities that push us to meet our values.

Parkinson's Law is another idea that relates to time management. It states that work often expands to fill the time allotted for its completion. This phenomenon leads to a lot of movement and very little progress. To avoid this, we need to leverage Parkinson's Law to become more efficient in getting through low-value tasks. Condensing processing into short windows can help us avoid the negative cognitive impact of task-switching. Additionally, we should work on big projects in 60-120 minute focus blocks.

Home in on the characteristics you want to embody, also known as your values. Listing your values and the activities that push you to meet them reveals any gaps between how you spend your time and who you want to become. Too often, people don't make time for their values. However, your life in the future won't look the way you want it to unless you take control of your time and attention.

In pursuit of our goals, we must focus on the big, weighty, and important tasks that will provide sufficient reward for our energy. We must ask ourselves if we are hunting antelope or field mice. A lion is capable of hunting field mice, but the prize would not be sufficient reward for the energy required to do so. Similarly, we must focus on the antelope, which requires considerable energy to hunt but provides a sufficient reward.

In conclusion, time management is a crucial factor in achieving our ideal future. We can use timeboxing to turn our values into time and focus on tasks that provide sufficient reward for our energy. By doing so, we can transform any good or bad fortune that comes our way into something of value. Remember, we cannot control what happens, but we can control our reaction to it.
