The value of the Highlight, Question, and Answer (HQ&A) technique comes down to the quality of the questions you ask, so being able to prime a state of mind that surfaces better questions will deepen your understanding of the text and make you a more original thinker. The study involved children who were presented with a marshmallow and given a choice: they could either eat the marshmallow immediately or wait for a few minutes and receive a second marshmallow as a reward. The results were astonishing.

The children who were willing to delay gratification and waited to receive the second marshmallow ended up having higher SAT scores, lower levels of substance abuse, lower likelihood of obesity, better responses to stress, better social skills as reported by their parents, and generally better scores in a range of other life measures. This study suggests that success is often dependent on our ability to choose the pain of discipline over the ease of distraction.

Delving deeper into the study, we discover that delayed gratification is not an innate trait but rather a skill that can be cultivated. The researchers found that each time a promise was made and fulfilled, the child's brain registered two important messages: waiting for gratification is worth it, and I have the capability to wait. As a result, the children who experienced consistent fulfillment of promises were able to delay gratification for a significantly longer time than those who didn't.

From this, we can conclude that our ability to delay gratification and display self-control is influenced by our experiences and environment. This realization is crucial because it means that we have the power to shape our own ability to be disciplined and take action instead of succumbing to distractions and easy choices.

So how can we apply this understanding to achieve success in various fields? The first step is to start small. Making your new habit "so easy you can't say no" allows you to build momentum. By improving one thing, even just by one percent, and repeating it daily, you gradually develop the discipline and self-control necessary for long-term success.

Consistency is key in maintaining progress. The "Seinfeld Strategy" can be a helpful tool in this regard. This strategy involves marking a calendar each day you complete your desired habit or task. The goal is to maintain an unbroken chain of X's on the calendar, which serves as a visual representation of your consistency. This visual reinforcement can motivate you to keep going.

To overcome the initial resistance to starting a new habit, it is essential to find a way to get started in less than two minutes. Breaking down the habit into its smallest possible component makes it easier to take the first step. Once you've started, it becomes easier to continue and build upon your progress.
