How I Became a Founder: Omneky’s Hikari Senju

In the world of technology, innovation is key. The constant change, independence, and camaraderie that come with being at the forefront of societal change is what drew me to this field. My journey as a founder began during my time studying computer science and attending events organized by Peter. It was at these events that I met like-minded students who would later become crucial members of my network of founders. To this day, these connections continue to play a vital role in my entrepreneurial journey.

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have received my first investment from Village Global just days after leaving my previous job at Yup. Village Global incubated my company, Omneky, for the first six months, providing not only financial support but also a community of fellow portfolio companies. We would gather for weekly dinners where we discussed the challenges we faced and shared our learnings. This experience taught me the value of community in building a successful company.

One of the biggest obstacles many founders face when starting a company is financial constraints. It can be challenging to take the risk of starting a company when you have the consistent income of a job to consider, especially if you have debts or have to provide for others in your family. This is why increasing access to capital is crucial in enabling more people to take the leap and start their own businesses.

In my journey as a founder, I have come to realize the importance of continuous learning. I am an avid reader, constantly seeking out new knowledge and insights. Learning is not just about acquiring information; it is about actively processing and digesting what we learn. This is where teaching comes into play.

Teaching is one of the noblest things we can do with our time on this planet. When we teach what we learn, we not only solidify our understanding of the topic but also gain new perspectives and insights. The act of teaching helps us notice mistakes in our thinking, sparks creativity, sharpens our ideas, and improves our memory retention.

Incorporating teaching into our daily lives exponentially increases our learning potential. It also allows us to build deeper relationships with those around us and make a bigger impact on the world. Teaching is scalable, and it may very well be the future of the sharing economy. We are all each other's teachers in some way or another, whether it be as colleagues, friends, mentors, parents, or spouses.

Humans are designed to learn and teach. Knowledge is a social organism that thrives on connection and dissemination. The famous Roman philosopher Seneca once said, "While we teach, we learn." This sentiment has been echoed by Warren Buffett, who attributes his success to being a learning machine. Buffett believes that constantly learning and sharing knowledge are the keys to achieving great things.

Creating a learning environment or community is essential in fostering the growth of individuals and society as a whole. Learning conversations, where friends engage in dialogue, debate, and exchange ideas, have historically led to some of the most remarkable insights. By embracing the Explanation Effect mental model, which highlights the benefits of teaching and sharing knowledge, we can tap into our full potential.

To get started with the habit of teaching, one simple approach is to create a daily "Today I Learned" email. This practice, inspired by the popular subreddit of the same name, allows you to share something new you've learned each day. Additionally, research from Harvard suggests that spending just 15 minutes at the end of the day reflecting on your learning can boost your overall retention by 23%.

By sharing what we learn with others, we not only deepen our relationships but also help others grow in their own lives. As the Dalai Lama once said, "Share your knowledge. It is a way to achieve immortality." Teaching is a powerful tool that allows us to leave a lasting impact on the world.

In conclusion, my journey as a founder has taught me the value of innovation, community, and continuous learning. To aspiring founders, I offer three actionable pieces of advice:

  1. Build a strong network: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who can support and inspire you on your entrepreneurial journey. Attend events, join communities, and foster connections.

  2. Seek out financial support: Explore resources and opportunities that can provide the necessary capital to start your own business. Look for incubators, accelerators, and investors who align with your vision.

  3. Embrace teaching and sharing knowledge: Incorporate teaching into your daily life to enhance your learning potential. Share what you learn with others and create a learning environment that fosters growth and connection.

By following these principles, you can pave the way for your own success as a founder and make a meaningful impact in the world of technology and innovation.
