New Decade, New Ideas: How AI is Transforming Media Forever
As we approach the tenth anniversary of the launch of Medium, the question arises: how do we increase the depth of understanding while creating a level playing field for ideas from anywhere? Medium has always believed that people from all walks of life have valuable perspectives to share, and that the world is better off when they do. This mission and vision have resonated with many, including myself.
The primary pursuit of my adult life has been building systems that enable the exchange of knowledge and ideas. The internet, which used to be about the internet itself, has now become about everything and affects everything. In order to stay relevant, I plan to spend the next few months or even years learning as much as possible about topics I don't know much about. This will not only benefit me personally but also be helpful to Medium and other companies I believe in.
One of the major ways that AI is transforming the media industry is by automating certain aspects of content creation. Media companies have always tried to de-risk creativity, as the creative act itself is inherently unpredictable. By implementing strategies such as summarizing other people's work, finding content arbitrage, creating formats, making content shorter and shallower, and making sequels, media companies have been able to de-risk their creative output. However, these strategies also make it easier for AI to automate the process.
Summary-based media products, shorter pieces, and content arbitrage are all easier to automate. This means that individual writers will have more leverage to create their own media products. The cost structure of creating these products will resemble that of software rather than traditional media, allowing writers to devote more time to gathering new facts and doing research. They will also have the opportunity to write longer, more interesting articles that are less amenable to automation.
While this shift presents new opportunities for writers, there is also risk involved for those currently working within larger companies, producing more de-risked types of editorial products. To mitigate this risk, it is crucial for writers to learn how to use AI tools today to improve their leverage and create high-quality work.
In conclusion, as we enter a new decade, it is evident that AI is transforming the media landscape forever. While this transformation brings both opportunities and risks, there are actionable steps that writers can take to adapt and thrive in this changing environment. Here are three pieces of advice:
-
Embrace AI tools: Learn how to use AI tools to your advantage. These tools can help you automate certain aspects of content creation, freeing up time for research and writing more in-depth articles that are less susceptible to automation.
-
Build your personal brand: Establish yourself as an expert in your niche. By creating a strong personal brand, you can differentiate yourself from AI-generated content and attract a loyal audience that values your unique perspective and insights.
-
Collaborate and network: Connect with other writers and professionals in the industry. Collaboration and networking can not only lead to new opportunities but also provide support and insights on navigating the changing media landscape.
By embracing these strategies and staying adaptable in the face of AI-driven changes, writers can continue to create meaningful and valuable content in the new decade and beyond.
