How I Use Roam and Notion for Personal Knowledge Management: Creating a Web of Ideas

Introduction:
After discovering the vast collection of notes left behind by my late grandfather, I realized the importance of structuring and organizing information for easy navigation and retrieval. Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) allows us to capture and cultivate ideas and insights from various sources, leading to more creative and high-quality work. By utilizing digital platforms like Roam and Notion, we can benefit from searchability, backups, syncing, and sharing, enabling us to be organized, proactive, and creative.

Organizing with the P.A.R.A. Method:
To ensure effective organization, I follow the P.A.R.A. method developed by productivity expert Tiago Forte. It involves categorizing files into Projects, Areas, Resources, and Archive. However, in Notion, I simplify this to P.A.A. (Projects, Areas, and Archive). This method allows me to have a wealth of content readily available for my creative endeavors, specifically in writing articles.

Notion as a Database:
Notion's database feature is particularly useful for managing ideas and articles. It offers various views, including lists, tables, boards, and kanban boards, catering to individual preferences. The simplicity of Notion's interface without excessive design options or emojis makes it perfect for learning and writing. As our brains function non-linearly, it's crucial to have a second brain that works the same way—allowing easy navigation between ideas.

Roam's Quick and Easy Page Creation:
One of Roam's standout features is its seamless page creation, accomplished by using the "[[]]" command. This feature is especially beneficial during the writing process, enabling effortless organization and easy access to related pages. Roam integrates with Readwise, a fantastic app that imports book highlights from Kindle, online content highlights from Instapaper, and even newsletter/email highlights. This workflow ensures that all my valuable highlights are readily available in Roam.

Engaging with Notes and Building a Web of Ideas:
It's essential to regularly engage with our notes rather than simply collecting them. By tagging and designing notes effectively, we can create connections and enhance the value of our web of ideas. Regularly reviewing Readwise's imported highlights in Roam allows me to search for relevant notes and resources quickly. The searchability and interconnectedness of ideas in Roam make it a powerful tool for personal knowledge management.

People's Migration Patterns During the Pandemic:
While many people have been leaving San Francisco during the pandemic, the majority have relocated to other Bay Area counties. This trend suggests that people are not moving far and could potentially lead to a silver lining in the post-pandemic economy. As rental and home prices rise in the suburbs, San Francisco's rent prices may continue to fall, making it more affordable for those who choose to remain.

Actionable Advice:

  1. Implement a digital filing system like the P.A.R.A. method or a simplified version that suits your needs. This method ensures easy access and organization of your files.
  2. Utilize the database feature in Notion or similar platforms to manage and track your ideas and articles effectively. Experiment with different views to find what works best for you.
  3. Embrace the power of Roam for capturing, organizing, and connecting your notes. Regularly engage with your notes, tag them appropriately, and actively build a web of ideas for maximum value.

Conclusion:
Personal knowledge management is crucial for harnessing our creativity and producing high-quality work. By incorporating tools like Roam and Notion into our workflow, we can achieve organization, searchability, and interconnectedness of ideas. Implementing effective systems, engaging with our notes, and creating a web of ideas are essential steps toward optimizing our personal knowledge management practices.
