The 3-Step Startup Marketing Framework We Created to Grow KISSmetrics

When you’re in the earliest stages of your business, you need to answer these three big questions about marketing: How do you identify your target audience? Where can you find them? How do you engage them? These questions are crucial for any startup looking to grow and succeed.

In the case of KISSmetrics, we initially had an audience in mind, but we quickly realized that we needed to get more specific in order to determine our marketing channel. Building a business on assumptions is sheer stupidity, and our assumptions weren't specific enough. We needed to identify a place of opportunity where we could listen, learn, and give value.

Our tool, KISSmetrics, was designed to provide actionable metrics for marketers. Therefore, our marketing strategy had to be valuable for marketers as well. We wanted to engage with potential customers and provide them with valuable content for free. This is the essence of content marketing - giving value to your audience.

At the time, Twitter was becoming popular, and we saw an opportunity to leverage it for our marketing efforts. Twitter in 2008 was limited, but something was gaining popularity - hashtags. Hashtags were less than a year old when we started using Twitter, and we discovered that by using specific hashtags, such as WeFollow and measure, we could easily gain new followers who were marketers. This allowed us to spread goodwill, promote great content, and build our own Twitter audience.

Identifying underused opportunities in a selected platform is crucial for startup marketing. For example, Airbnb knew that their target audience was searching on Craigslist, so they hacked Craigslist to promote their listings. Snapchat targeted the high school demographic by locating popular students in high schools and incentivizing them to share the app with others. Finding one method that works and focusing on a single channel at a time is a recommended approach.

Another important aspect of startup marketing is focusing only on the users that matter. It's a waste of time to engage with followers who are not interested in your product or service. Identify your target customer by understanding what your product does, what problem it solves, and who wants this problem solved. By focusing on the users who are genuinely interested, you can deliver a high amount of value to them.

In terms of fundraising, it's essential to trust data, users, and your instinct. People will give you different advice, but ultimately, you need to make decisions based on what you believe in and what the data and users are telling you. The future is unwritten, and you shouldn't take all the advice you receive.

Ben Silbermann, the co-founder of Pinterest, shared some valuable advice for startup founders. First, build something that you truly believe in and love because if you don't, you'll eventually burn out. Second, don't give up on your dream. Don't let anyone talk you out of it. Stay focused and persevere.

In conclusion, the 3-step startup marketing framework we created to grow KISSmetrics involved identifying underused opportunities, focusing on the users that matter, and delivering massive doses of value. By following these steps, startups can find their target audience, engage with them effectively, and ultimately achieve growth and success. So, if you're a startup founder, remember to identify opportunities, focus on the right users, and deliver value consistently.
