"The 3-Step Startup Marketing Framework: How to Identify, Find, and Engage Your Target Audience"

When starting a business, one of the biggest challenges is figuring out how to effectively market your product or service. This involves answering three crucial questions: How do you identify your target audience? Where can you find them? And how do you engage them?

In the early stages of our business, we realized that we needed to get more specific in identifying our target customer. Building a business on assumptions is never a good idea, and our assumptions were not specific enough. We needed to find a place of opportunity where we could listen, learn, and provide value.

This is where content marketing came into play. Our tool, KISSmetrics, was designed to provide actionable metrics, so our marketing had to be valuable for marketers. The idea behind content marketing is giving value, ideally for free. We wanted to engage with potential customers and allow them to engage with us.

At the time, Twitter was becoming popular, and hashtags were gaining traction. We saw this as an underused opportunity and started using hashtags like WeFollow to gain new followers who were marketers. By sharing other marketers' content and tagging each tweet with measure, we were able to spread goodwill, promote great content, and build our own Twitter audience.

This approach worked wonders for us, as our Twitter audience grew gradually and then rapidly. Eventually, our site was booming with referral traffic from Twitter. This goes to show the power of identifying underused opportunities in a selected platform.

However, it is important to note that what worked for us may not work for everyone. It is crucial to identify emergent trends within tactics and find methods that resonate with your target audience. Take Airbnb, for example. They hacked Craigslist to promote their listings because they knew their target audience was searching there. Snapchat targeted the high school demographic by incentivizing popular students to share the app with others.

Another important aspect of marketing is focusing only on the users that matter. It's easy to get caught up in vanity metrics like follower count, but the only followers that truly matter are those who want to engage with you. Anyone else is a waste of your time and effort.

To effectively identify your target customer, you need to understand what your product does, what problem it solves, and who wants this problem solved. Once you have a clear understanding of your target audience, you can start finding out where they hang out. Create a master list of potential places, establish criteria for what a solid marketing channel is, and vet your list according to those criteria.

Finally, to engage with your customers, you need to identify your method of engagement and expand as far as this method allows. However, it's important to confine your reach only to the target audience. Don't waste your efforts on those who are not interested. Aim to deliver a high amount of value without expecting anything in return.

In conclusion, marketing is a crucial aspect of growing a startup. By following a 3-step framework of identifying, finding, and engaging your target audience, you can effectively market your product or service. Remember to identify underused opportunities, focus on the users that matter, and always provide value.
