Becoming Who You Are: Why Don’t Most People Reach Their Potential?
There are two states of being: surviving and thriving. As human beings, our innate need is to satisfy the requirements of survival. We strive to ensure our physical well-being so that we can provide for ourselves and nurture offspring. However, there is also a deeper desire within us to make something of ourselves beyond mere survival. We yearn to thrive in the world and live up to our true potential.
In his book, "The Farther Reaches of Human Nature," psychologist Abraham Maslow emphasizes the importance of self-actualization. He states, "A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. What a man can be, he must be." This quote encapsulates the essence of reaching our potential and becoming who we truly are.
In today's complex and fast-paced world, our lives have shifted from managing our physical well-being to navigating the emotional realm of consciousness. We are bombarded with an overwhelming amount of information through our media devices. Unfortunately, much of this information is false or useless, making it challenging to discern what truly matters.
To reach our potential, we must engage in two important processes: differentiation and integration. Differentiation involves discovering our individual values and what sets us apart from others. Integration, on the other hand, is the process of connecting these values to our day-to-day actions and creating a meaningful narrative for our lives.
There are individuals who are integrated but not differentiated. These people have not exposed themselves to the complexities of the world and have not done the necessary work to discover their individuality. On the other hand, there are those who are differentiated but not integrated. They have explored different aspects of life and identified their values, but struggle to make these values cohere into a cohesive whole.
In today's world, the democratization of information is one of the great justices we have. Through the internet and libraries, knowledge is readily available to anyone willing to seek it out. However, it is essential to learn how to harness this abundance of information effectively. All the answers we seek are already out there, waiting for us to take the initiative to find them and have the courage to incorporate them into our lives.
So, how can we reach our potential and become who we truly are? Here are three actionable pieces of advice:
-
Embrace self-discovery: Take the time to explore different aspects of life and expose yourself to new experiences. This will help you uncover your unique values and what truly matters to you.
-
Align your actions with your values: Once you have identified your values, make a conscious effort to integrate them into your daily life. Ensure that your actions align with what you believe in, as this will bring a sense of coherence and fulfillment.
-
Continuously seek knowledge and growth: Never stop learning and growing. The world is constantly evolving, and there is always more to discover. Stay curious and open-minded, and be willing to incorporate new ideas and perspectives into your life.
In conclusion, reaching our potential and becoming who we truly are is a lifelong journey. It requires self-discovery, integration of our values into our actions, and a commitment to continuous learning and growth. By embracing these principles and harnessing the abundance of information available to us, we can unlock our true potential and live a fulfilling life. Remember, the only person who can truly look out for us is the person we see in the mirror.
