The Shaping of the Creator Economy: Lessons from Successful Individuals and Big Tech Giants

I Studied Hundreds of Successful People — And Wrote a Book About What I Learned. There’s an old saying that claims every person should do the following three things in their lifetime: Plant a tree, have a child, and write a book. The idea is that all three will live on long after we’re gone. This saying resonates deeply as it highlights the importance of leaving a lasting impact on the world. And in my journey of studying successful individuals, I discovered that the highest performers don't rely on "tricks" or "hacks" to achieve greatness. Instead, they use mental frameworks that fundamentally change the way they see the world.

Idolizing traps you into imitating ‘perfect’ versions of imperfect people. Learning, on the other hand, allows you to observe, synthesize, and pave your own path. There is no perfect human being, but I believe that we can all learn from each other’s most fulfilling successes—as well as our most devastating failures.

The rise of the creator economy further demonstrates the power of individuals to shape the world. Influencers, who were once frustrated by the lack of rewards from big media platforms, have now gained leverage and influence. The platforms realized that they were at risk of losing their labor force if they didn't provide better incentives for creators. As a result, we've seen a significant increase in the number of content creators earning substantial incomes from ads and fan support.

Big tech giants like Facebook and Amazon have also recognized the potential of the creator economy. Facebook, for example, has introduced features such as Stars, a native tipping system that allows users to tip creators. They also plan to enable creators to charge for access to Live Audio Rooms and have established an Audio Creator Fund to support emerging creators. Amazon, on the other hand, has developed tools like the Amazon Live Creator app and Twitch, its game streaming service, to empower influencers and provide them with new avenues for monetization.

However, as big tech companies enter the creator economy, there are concerns about the platform fees they impose. For instance, Apple's 30% fee on app purchases has been criticized as a bottleneck to the growth of the creator economy. Some argue that if the fee were reduced to 3%, the creator economy would be ten times larger. This highlights the importance of fair and reasonable platform fees to foster a thriving creator ecosystem.

While big tech companies focus on retaining users and developing products and services on their own platforms, creators are increasingly seeking platform-agnostic approaches. They aim to establish themselves as independent brands to reduce dependence on any one platform. This shift towards independence allows creators to have more control over their content, monetization, and brand image.

So, what can we learn from the shaping of the creator economy and the success of individuals? Here are three actionable pieces of advice:

  1. Embrace a learning mindset: Rather than idolizing and imitating others, focus on learning from their successes and failures. Synthesize different perspectives and pave your own path.

  2. Diversify your platforms: While it's important to leverage big tech platforms for reach and monetization, don't rely solely on one platform. Explore different avenues, build your brand independently, and reduce dependence on any single platform.

  3. Advocate for fair platform fees: As the creator economy grows, it's crucial to advocate for fair and reasonable platform fees. High fees can hinder the growth of the creator ecosystem and limit the potential earnings for individual creators.

In conclusion, the creator economy is being shaped by both successful individuals who have mastered mental frameworks and big tech giants who recognize the power and influence of creators. By embracing a learning mindset, diversifying platforms, and advocating for fair platform fees, individuals can navigate this evolving landscape and thrive as creators. It's an exciting time where the lines between consumption and creation are blurring, and the democratization of creativity is becoming a reality.
