Asymptotic marketplaces, which are more vulnerable to competition, see their value decrease as more competitors enter the market. Data network effects occur when a product's value increases with more data, and additional usage yields more data. This asymmetrical relationship between usage and data gathered is akin to the 90-9-1 rule, where a small percentage of users generate most of the content or value.
Technological advantages, once a significant defensibility factor, now have a short half-life. In today's fast-paced world, competitors quickly catch up, either by copying or developing their own technology. However, tech performance network effects offer a runaway advantage to the first mover, making it difficult for competitors to catch up once the product is established.
Social network effects operate through psychology and interactions between people. While challenging to deploy for long-term defensibility, they can provide a significant advantage if harnessed successfully. Language, for example, displays a "winner-take-most" tendency, as people within the same political, social, and economic units tend to coalesce around one language. Startups can leverage this by creating business category language or naming their company or product strategically.
Belief network effects are another powerful force. As more people believe in certain ideas or beliefs, they become more valuable to believers. This phenomenon is similar to how sand can transform into stone when layered upon itself. Bandwagon network effects occur when social pressure pushes people to join a network, fearing they will be left out. Apple has mastered this concept with their carefully scripted product demos and launches, creating buzz and FOMO (fear of missing out) among consumers.
