Becoming Who You Are: Why Don't Most People Reach Their Potential?

In our journey through life, there are two states of being: surviving and thriving. While survival is essential for our existence, it is not enough for us to truly reach our potential. To truly thrive, we must go beyond mere survival and tap into our innate desire to make something of ourselves in the world.

The complexities of the modern environment have shifted our focus from managing our physical survival to navigating the emotional realm of consciousness. Our lives are bombarded with an overwhelming amount of information, much of it false or useless. The democratization of information through the internet and other resources has made knowledge abundantly available, but it is up to us to harness its potential.

To live up to our true selves and reach our potential, we must undergo a process of differentiation and integration. Differentiation involves discovering our individual values, while integration is the process of aligning those values with our day-to-day actions. Some people may be integrated but lack differentiation, as they have not exposed themselves to the complexities of the world. On the other hand, some may be differentiated but struggle to bring all their values together coherently.

We must remember that the only person who can truly look out for us is the person we see in the mirror. It is up to us to take the initiative to seek out the answers and have the courage to incorporate them into our lives. However, it is easy to get caught up in note-taking systems and knowledge management, which can hinder our ability to create and synthesize new ideas.

While note-taking can be helpful, it is crucial to keep it as elementary as possible. Our natural salience filter, the things that organically stick to our minds, should guide us in what we choose to record. Relying on preexisting criteria or complex note-taking systems may lead us away from what truly resonates with us. Leonardo da Vinci's approach to note-taking, with all his notes gathered in one big book known as a commonplace book, is a testament to the simplicity and effectiveness of keeping things in one place.

To ensure we are reaching our potential, we should prioritize channeling the ideas that are in the air at any given moment instead of getting lost in our note-taking systems. The most impactful and heart-stopping creations often come from synthesizing the previously unarticulated in the present moment. Utilizing our databases and note-taking systems to search for related topics and ideas can be beneficial, but it should not overshadow the act of creation itself.

In conclusion, to become who we truly are and reach our potential, we must go beyond mere survival and tap into our innate desire to thrive in the world. This requires a process of differentiation and integration, where we discover our individual values and align them with our actions. The abundance of information available to us is a gift, but only if we learn to harness its potential effectively. By keeping our note-taking systems simple and prioritizing the act of creation over excessive organization, we can truly unlock our potential and live up to our true selves.
