Designing a Better Reading Experience with Matter: Exploring the Future of User-Centric Content Consumption
In today's digital age, reading online has become a multifaceted experience that encompasses not only the act of reading itself but also the decision-making process of what to read and how to utilize the knowledge gained. With the rise of read-it-later apps, such as Pocket, the concept of saving articles for later consumption has become a core practice for many individuals, including myself.
However, the first generation of read-it-later apps lacked the intelligence and functionality needed to enhance the reading experience. They failed to assist with prioritization, resurfacing, or content decay, leaving users overwhelmed with an ever-growing list of saved articles. This realization led me and my co-founder, Rob Mackenzie, to create Matter, a platform aimed at revolutionizing the way we read and engage with online content.
Drawing inspiration from Jeff Bezos' philosophy of focusing on needs that won't change, we recognized that the supply of great content will continue to rise, while attention will always remain scarce. Therefore, the importance of making informed decisions about what to read will only increase over time. Trust plays a vital role in this decision-making process, and we believe that people trust people. With this in mind, we made the conscious decision to elevate writers as first-class citizens within our system.
Curation, we discovered, is incredibly valuable, especially when it comes to unearthing hidden gems that are often overlooked by engagement-based algorithms. While the bias towards new content is understandable, as our information consumption tends to prioritize what's fresh, we believe that the pendulum has swung too far in that direction. The majority of the best content ever produced was not written in the past week, and we aim to strike a balance by serving as a counterweight to this bias.
Our mission extends beyond improving the reading experience; we also strive to address the challenges posed by email inboxes. While newsletters have experienced a renaissance, traditional email platforms are not optimized for reading. Most people want to breeze through their inboxes as quickly as possible, rather than spending more time there. Additionally, the inability to highlight or annotate within emails hampers the learning experience. To overcome these limitations, we have implemented highly reliable parsing techniques, including natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision, to enhance the user experience.
In recent years, audio consumption has gained significant traction, driven by the convenience of hardware that enables easy listening. Recognizing this trend, we introduced a feature called "audio highlights," allowing users to highlight passages while listening without needing to open their phones. By simply triple-tapping their AirPods or pressing both volume buttons simultaneously, users can seamlessly engage with audio content.
Furthermore, we introduced the concept of minimaps, inspired by video games and code editors. With a two-finger tap, users can access a miniaturized version of an article, enabling them to scan headers and navigate quickly. This feature has proven especially effective on mobile devices and holds promise for further optimization on desktop web platforms.
Our core users, whom we refer to as "active" readers, are intentional and proactive in curating their information diets. They have favorite writers, subscribe to newsletters, and frequent obscure blogs. Understanding their needs and aspirations, our primary goal is to increase the return on investment (ROI) of reading. We want to empower individuals to derive more insight, knowledge, and thrill from the time they invest in reading.
In conclusion, as we delve into the future of user-centric content consumption, it is evident that the ownership economy and the utilization of cryptocurrencies are integral to the next frontier of consumer software. The innovation brought forth by tokens and the concept of user ownership revolutionizes how software platforms are built, operated, and funded. By aligning economic interests with users, these platforms can foster a cooperative economic model that ensures better long-term alignment, resilience, and innovation.
The adoption of new protocols follows a predictable pattern, with early adopters utilizing the technology to accomplish previously impossible tasks. To achieve widespread adoption, founders must focus on building products that make these new models accessible to a broader audience. Bitcoin and Ethereum serve as prime examples of the success that comes from user-owned and operated networks. These platforms enable users to earn the majority of the value generated from their collective contributions, shifting the power away from a platform's inner circle and toward the users themselves.
While adoption remains a significant challenge for startups and new technologies, the opportunity lies in creating more accessible products and protocols that foster economic alignment with users. By leveraging the ownership economy, we can bootstrap adoption and encourage active participation, ultimately creating larger, more resilient, and more innovative platforms.
Actionable Advice:
- Prioritize trust and elevate writers: Incorporate curation and highlight overlooked gems to help users make informed decisions about what to read.
- Enhance the email reading experience: Improve parsing techniques and introduce features that enable highlighting and annotation within emails.
- Embrace audio consumption and multi-platform optimization: Integrate audio highlights and develop features like minimaps to enhance the reading experience on diverse devices.
As we continue to evolve in the digital age, the future of reading online holds immense potential. By designing better reading experiences, embracing ownership economies, and leveraging user-centric models, we can unlock new frontiers of knowledge, insight, and engagement. The golden age of reading awaits, and it is up to us to shape it.
