The Criticality Of Timing: The Key to Success in Business and Investing

Timing is everything. It is a concept that holds true in many aspects of life, and the world of business and investing is no exception. In fact, the outcome of your work is determined by timing just as much as other variables. Timing is worthy of our respect and attention because at any point in time, companies have a unique set of needs, opportunities, and insecurities. Like meeting a loved one, a great match is as much about timing as it is about capabilities and shared values.

To lead an industry, companies require different leaders or different leadership styles at different times. This observation highlights the importance of understanding the ever-changing landscape of business and adapting accordingly. As a leader, one of the most important lessons I have learned over the years is the value of waiting for the process to unfold. Achieving a vision without breaking the system requires periods of generating buy-in, exhaustive testing, and allowing time for ideas to sink in and for people to get on board. Patience is key.

Pacing is important, and most new ideas should be killed for the sake of focus. Only the best leaders can maintain healthy incrementalism while imposing the occasional transformational jolt when needed. Incrementalism, although necessary for steady progress, can also hinder growth. The inevitable outcome of any business governed by incrementalism is a limited market size because the local maximum, the closest hill, becomes the limit. Given the criticality of timing, incrementalism kills too many great ideas by pushing them to fruition too late.

However, it is important to note that some new ideas are inflections and must be executed in full before they can function. The best teams know when to do this and can reorganize to pull it off. This ability to recognize inflection points and act accordingly is what sets apart truly successful companies from the rest.

Investing, much like business, is also heavily influenced by timing. It is a discipline focused on the future that can only be determined by the present. When considering investments, it is crucial to ground forecasts for the future with a deep and accurate understanding of present-day problems and humanity in the moment. This brings to mind John Maxwell's 6 Principles: the desire to be valued, appreciated, trusted, respected, understood, and not taken advantage of. Basic human values such as finding joy, exploring curiosity, connecting with like minds, stimulating pride, increasing social status, and influencing society are also important considerations.

When it comes to investing at the right time, my criteria revolve around whether the team is attempting to defy a likely outcome or make it happen in a better way. I invest in the latter. Scott Belsky's criteria for investing align with this approach, emphasizing the importance of teams that can parlay forces already underway to their favor. The best teams are grounded by the present and are able to capture a tailwind.

Moving beyond the concept of timing, we must also recognize that being smart does not guarantee success. Einstein, one of the greatest minds in history, was not just smart, but he had important new ideas. This distinction highlights the fact that intelligence and the value of new ideas are not one and the same. While intelligence can be easily measured and judged, the true worth of ideas is often subjective and requires a different set of qualities to discover.

One of the most important qualities for discovering new ideas is an obsessive interest in a particular topic. This passion drives individuals to delve deeper into a subject and uncover new insights that others may overlook. Additionally, independent-mindedness is crucial. The ability to think outside the box and challenge conventional wisdom is what allows for groundbreaking ideas to emerge.

Surprisingly, writing ability is also a key ingredient in the discovery of new ideas. The act of writing essays and books can unlock a flow of thoughts and concepts that may have otherwise remained dormant. It is through the process of putting pen to paper that ideas can take shape and be shared with the world.

In conclusion, the criticality of timing cannot be understated in the realms of business and investing. It is a factor that can make or break a company's success. By understanding the ever-changing landscape, being patient, and recognizing inflection points, businesses can stay ahead of the curve and thrive. Additionally, the value of new ideas should not be underestimated, and qualities such as passion, independent-mindedness, and writing ability can play a significant role in their discovery. So, whether you are a business leader or an investor, remember to embrace the power of timing and the potential of new ideas as you navigate the ever-evolving world of opportunities.
