Knowledge Is Power – And Why You Should Share It

In a world where knowledge is power, the act of sharing knowledge takes on a profound significance. By sharing our wisdom and insights, we not only empower others but also ignite a transformative process within them. This act of sharing is not merely about giving information; it is about guiding others to discover their own potential and capabilities. The true power of knowledge lies not in its possession, but in its dissemination. By sharing knowledge selflessly, we offer others an opportunity to gain insights, learn from our experiences, and expand their horizons.

When we share knowledge, we elevate those around us. It resides in them, so sharing knowledge is a way to achieve immortality. As B.B. King once said, "The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you." When we pass on our knowledge to others, we leave a lasting legacy that transcends physical existence. The knowledge we impart becomes a part of the collective consciousness, shaping future generations and influencing the course of history. In this way, sharing knowledge becomes a means of achieving a form of immortality—an eternal presence in the minds and hearts of those who benefit from our wisdom.

While innovations in Knowledge Management often focus on technical approaches or structural aspects of knowledge storing, less attention is paid to the different aspects of human motivation and the individual willingness to knowledge sharing. Gamification has proven to be a feasible approach to increase employee motivation in Knowledge Management.

Knowledge management (KM) comprises the processes of creating, storing, transferring, and applying knowledge within a company. Creating and maintaining a shared and searchable knowledge base supports the re-usage of knowledge and, hereby, value-creation of the company. However, a knowledge management system alone cannot guarantee successful KM. According to Rosenstiel, human behavior is affected by four conditions: individual skills, situational enabling, empowerment and obligation, and individual desire. There is a positive correlation between motivation and knowledge sharing willingness and behavior.

The aim of this paper is to outline opportunities to address and strengthen the necessary motivation for KM in a targeted manner. Gamification, defined as "the use of game elements in non-game contexts," by Deterding, Khaled, Nacke, and Dixon, offers a solution to motivate employees in the knowledge sharing process. By incorporating gamification mechanics like challenges, competition, feedback, performance graphs, rewards, and status, incentives are created within the knowledge management system that address both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

Intrinsic motivation, which brings a feeling of doing something valuable or doing it out of enjoyment, has proven to be the most supportive motivational type for KM. It has a lasting effect and a positive impact on knowledge sharing quality. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is controlled and makes people act out of obligation, pressure, or coercion. Therefore, gamification will be successful in the long term only in combination with an appropriate corporate culture and an organizational climate that promote an open exchange of knowledge and rewards KM activities.

However, it must not be forgotten that incentives do not have a uniform effect on all employees. The individual perception of external incentives, whether they are perceived as controlling or not, has an impact on the effect. In order to effectively utilize gamification in knowledge management, it is crucial to understand the individual motivations and tailor the incentives accordingly.

In conclusion, sharing knowledge is a powerful act that not only empowers others but also shapes the future. By selflessly sharing our wisdom and insights, we create a cycle of learning and enlightenment that benefits both the giver and the receiver. Incorporating gamification in knowledge management can enhance employee motivation and foster a culture of knowledge sharing. However, it is important to understand individual motivations and design incentives that align with both intrinsic and extrinsic motivators.

Actionable Advice:

  1. Foster a culture of knowledge sharing by creating an organizational climate that encourages open exchange and rewards KM activities.
  2. Incorporate gamification elements in the knowledge management system to address motivational aspects like reciprocity, reputation, and visibility of achievements.
  3. Understand individual motivations by considering the perception of external incentives and tailor the incentives accordingly to effectively utilize gamification in knowledge management.
