The Best Way to Find More Time to Read and Discover Great Books on Goodreads
In today's fast-paced world, finding time to read can often feel like an impossible task. However, there is no secret to it. As simple as it sounds, finding time to read boils down to choices about how you allocate your time. And allocating your time is how successful people increase productivity.
When reading, it is important to make the most out of the experience. Many avid readers, myself included, take notes while reading. This can involve underlining important passages, synthesizing information, asking questions, and relating concepts from other things we've read. By actively engaging with the material, we not only absorb it better but also make it more meaningful to ourselves.
If you assume that the average person spends 3-4 hours a day watching TV, an hour or more commuting, and another 2-3 hours a week shopping, that's a total of 28 hours a week on the low end. Imagine if you dedicated even a fraction of that time to reading. By consciously choosing to prioritize reading over other activities, you can significantly increase the time you spend with books.
But finding time to read is just the first step. It's equally important to make the most out of what you read. When you're not reading, try to think about what you've just read. Rather than mindlessly scrolling through your phone or engaging in other idle activities, use those moments to reflect on the ideas and concepts you've encountered in your reading. This not only helps reinforce your learning but also allows you to apply those insights to your own life.
For me, reading is more than just a means of entertainment; it's a way to increase knowledge, find meaning, and gain a better understanding of others and myself. Reading is a journey of discovery, where each book has the potential to make our lives better and help us make fewer mistakes. As Nassim Taleb, the author of Antifragile, aptly puts it, "Odds are that no matter what you're working on, someone somewhere, who is smarter than you, has probably thought about your problem and put it into a book."
Goodreads, the popular online platform for book lovers, understands the value of reading and the power of recommendations. Founded in 2006, Goodreads addresses what publishers call the "discoverability problem" by guiding consumers in the digital age to find books they might want to read. The theory behind Goodreads is that people will put more faith in book recommendations from a social network they build themselves.
Goodreads not only provides a platform for readers to connect and share their thoughts but also offers recommendations based on individual preferences. After a user has rated 20 books on its five-star scale, the site begins making personalized recommendations. This recommendation system is believed to be superior to other platforms, like Amazon, as it takes into account solid data rather than just browsing or purchasing history.
