Unlocking the Power of Memory and the Value of Meaningful Work
In today's information age, we have access to an unprecedented amount of knowledge. However, turning that information into useful and actionable knowledge remains a challenge. This is where the concept of "Memory as a Service" comes into play. The idea is to use technology to improve human memory and make better sense of the information we already have.
When it comes to accessing knowledge, most of the focus has been on consumer learning platforms that help us acquire new knowledge. Platforms like Duolingo, Quizlet, Codecademy, Outschool, and Brilliant have revolutionized the way we learn. But there's another aspect to the "Access to Knowledge" thesis that is equally important – making better sense of the knowledge we already possess.
One way technology can help with this is by improving our memory. Tools like Google Photos, which prompts us to revisit memories from years ago, showcase the power of leveraging technology to enhance our recollection. However, the ideal product approach for improving memory is still up for debate. While pooling memories from multiple sources and indexing them can be a step forward, it also raises concerns about privacy and security.
Moving on to the topic of meaningful work, it's important to understand what makes us feel good about the work we do. Contrary to popular belief, it's not just about loving what we do. The way our efforts are acknowledged and valued plays a crucial role in our satisfaction. Shredding someone's effort in front of them or ignoring their performance can take away the joy and meaning they derive from their work.
People value what they put effort into more than what is externally evaluated. The more effort they invest, the more they value their work, and they assume others would value it as well. When work becomes too easy or requires no effort, people struggle to feel a connection to it. This is why something as simple as removing the need for eggs and milk from a cake mix can diminish the sense of ownership and pride in the final product.
Meaning is a significant factor in motivating individuals. Even when there's not much opportunity for significant meaning, even small meanings can make a difference. The correlation between one's love for a particular activity and the amount of effort they put into it is strong. However, when meaning is crushed by breaking things in front of people's eyes or by ignoring their performance, the joy and motivation are eliminated.
Acknowledgment and recognition, even in the simplest form of scanning someone's work and saying "Uh huh," can dramatically improve motivation. People need to feel that their efforts are seen and appreciated. Moreover, the effort required to complete a task contributes to the sense of connection and pride in the final outcome.
