One popular design model that has gained significant traction is the Double Diamond model. This model, officially invented by the British Design Council in 2005, consists of four stages: Discovery, Definition, Development, and Delivery.
The Discovery stage is all about gathering information and understanding the problem at hand. This involves various techniques such as mind maps, brainstorming sessions, desk research, field research (interviews, focus groups, observations, and consumer journey mapping), and more. The goal is to immerse the design team in the research process and bring them face-to-face with the users. Take Starbucks, for example. The company ensures that every designer spends a month working as a barista before designing anything. This hands-on experience helps them gain valuable insights into the user experience and design solutions accordingly.
Once the Discovery stage is complete, it's time to move on to the Definition stage. This stage involves analyzing the findings from the previous stage and filtering out irrelevant data. It sets the context for product development, assesses the feasibility of the project, and ensures alignment with the corporate brand. One effective technique used in this stage is root cause analysis, where designers dig deep to identify the underlying causes of the problem they are trying to solve. The 5 why's technique is another useful tool that helps uncover the true reasons behind a particular issue. Additionally, user stories are created to understand the needs and motivations of the users.
As we progress through the Double Diamond model, we reach the Development stage. This is where the actual product or solution starts taking shape. By involving different departments in the design process, companies can reduce the number of prototypes needed and identify potential problems early on. Microsoft believes in the philosophy of designers "eating their own dog food," which means using their own creations in their work to understand the user's perspective. To facilitate this process, it's crucial for designers to have access to professional tools that allow them to make design changes quickly and efficiently. This ensures that the final product meets the user's needs and expectations.
Finally, we arrive at the Delivery stage of the Double Diamond model. This is where the solution is implemented and launched in the market. It is important to note that the Double Diamond model is not a linear process. It is iterative, meaning that each stage may require revisiting and refining the previous stages. This allows for continuous improvement and ensures that the final product is of the highest quality.
