The Intersection of Luck and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

Luck and chance are often considered unpredictable and uncontrollable factors in our lives. In his book "Chase, Chance, and Creativity," he identifies four types of luck.

Chance I is the purest form of luck, where something fortuitous happens without any effort or intention on our part. It is entirely accidental and beyond our control. This kind of luck is like stumbling upon a hidden opportunity when we least expect it. It is the result of being open to possibilities and taking action.

Chance II involves adding motion and action to the equation. By stirring up the pot and bringing in random ideas that collide and stick together in fresh combinations, we create an environment where chance can operate. This type of luck requires curiosity, experimentation, and exploration. It favors those who are constantly seeking new experiences and willing to take risks.

Chance III goes beyond mere action and requires a special receptivity, discernment, and intuitive grasp of significance unique to a particular individual. It is the kind of luck that only one person, uniquely equipped to observe and understand, can fully grasp. It involves personal sensory receptivity and the ability to connect seemingly unrelated dots.

Chance IV is the most personalized form of luck. It arises from the distinctive actions and behaviors of an individual. It is not easily understood by others because it is deeply intertwined with one's personality, hobbies, and lifestyle. This type of luck favors those with eccentric and unique interests and motor behaviors. It is a result of who you are and how you behave.

Interestingly, these different types of luck can also be applied to the development and emergence of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). AGI refers to a highly autonomous system that outperforms humans in most economically valuable work. The birth of AGI can be seen as a combination of chance and intentional human action.

The recent advancements in AGI, such as the development of the GPT-3.5 series model, showcase the influence of chance and human intervention. This model, which has long-term memory and improved zero-shot generation capabilities, demonstrates the potential of combining creativity and instruction. It excels in brainstorming, drafting, and presenting information in creative ways.
