The Explosion of 2nd Brain Apps: Luck and the Entrepreneur
In today's fast-paced world, where information overload is the norm, it's no wonder that many of us struggle to keep track of everything. We search for ways to streamline and organize our thoughts, but often find ourselves lacking a clear direction. This is where 2nd brain apps come into play.
One such app that has caught my attention is Glasp. Although it's not a traditional app, but rather a browser extension, it offers an intriguing concept of knowledge influencing. I've only had Glasp for less than two weeks, so I'm still exploring its full potential. However, I can already see the benefits it provides.
One of the key features of Glasp is the ability to highlight and categorize information. Inspired by an article I read about studying with a highlighter, I decided to implement a color scheme. Yellow for standard highlights and insights, blue for facts or terminology, red for statements I disagree with, and green for the main takeaway points. What's great is that these highlights, along with their metadata, can easily be pasted into my Obsidian Vault.
But how does luck fit into all of this? Dr. James Austin, a neurologist and philosopher, delves into the concept of luck in his book, "Chase, Chance, and Creativity." He identifies four types of luck, each with its own characteristics and implications for entrepreneurs.
Chance I is pure blind luck that occurs completely by accident, without any effort on our part. This type of luck is unpredictable and occurs without any discernable human intention. It's the kind of luck that we can't influence or control.
In Chance II, something changes. A certain level of action is added to the equation, stirring up the pot and bringing in random ideas that collide and stick together in fresh combinations. This type of luck requires us to keep stirring things up, allowing for chance to operate. As Charles Kettering once said, "Keep on going and chances are you will stumble on something, perhaps when you are least expecting it. I have never heard of anyone stumbling on something sitting down."
Chance III goes beyond random chance. It involves a special receptivity, discernment, and intuitive grasp of significance unique to one particular recipient. This type of luck favors those who have a sufficient background of sound knowledge, coupled with special abilities in observing, remembering, recalling, and quickly forming significant new associations. It's about being in the right place at the right time, with the right mindset to recognize and seize opportunities that others may overlook.
