🌲When Themed Logs are More Useful than Daily Notes

When it comes to organizing information, many people opt for chronology, arranging their notes and logs based on the date they were created. However, there is another method that proves to be more effective in terms of focus, retrieval, and reducing context switching – grouping information by purpose. This approach involves creating themed logs that categorize content based on its intended use rather than the order in which it was written.

Over the years, I've made numerous attempts to establish various habits, such as a mindless exercise routine, eating a nice breakfast, remembering to take my vitamins, waking up early, and doing spaced repetition of my notes with Readwise. Unfortunately, these endeavors have not been very successful. One of the reasons for this is the way I organize my information. When I search for things in my note-taking app, the file names are the most prominent part of the search results. As I browse through links, folders, and tags, I am constantly reminded of file names. Even my graph displays file names. This overemphasis on file names, particularly in daily notes that are titled by date, poses a significant challenge to effective information retrieval and focus.

Moving away from chronology and embracing themed logs can bring about several benefits. By organizing information based on purpose, you can have a clearer overview of specific topics or areas of interest. This allows for easier retrieval of relevant information when you need it, without having to sift through a chronological list of notes. Moreover, it helps in reducing context switching, as you can focus on a particular theme or topic for a longer period without distractions. Themed logs also enable better collaboration, as team members can contribute to specific areas of interest and find relevant information more easily.

Now, let's shift our focus to another topic – the hard thing about communities. Communities thrive on the active participation and contributions of their members. However, people will only contribute to a community if they trust that their time and energy will be put to good use. Trust is the foundation upon which successful communities are built.

To foster trust within a community, several key factors come into play. Firstly, community members need to believe that their contributions will be utilized effectively. They want to know that their efforts will make a meaningful impact and help the community progress towards its goals. The intentions behind the community must also be genuine and aligned with the values and aspirations of its members. When people share the same values, they are more likely to trust and engage with the community.
