This fear of failure extends to our education and career choices. Millennials strive to find employment that reflects well on their parents, impresses their peers, and fulfills the idea of doing work that they are passionate about. However, this pursuit of passion often leads to disappointment when the promised fulfillment and success do not materialize.
In our quest for success, we have become masters of self-branding. Social media platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn have become tools for creating personal brands and developing a following that can be leveraged. However, the more work we put into branding ourselves, the worse our jobs become. Despite our efficiency and steadfastness, we face lower pay, worse benefits, and less job security.
The pressure to optimize every aspect of our lives has also infiltrated our personal spaces. Influenced by mainstream media and lifestyle trends, we are constantly bombarded with the message that our homes should be as optimized as our careers. This obsession with optimization only adds to our fatigue and burnout, turning self-care into yet another task on our never-ending to-do list.
Financial insecurity further compounds the burden of burnout. Research has shown that those who are financially insecure bear a massive cognitive load, constantly navigating the threats and expectations placed upon them. To survive, we are forced to normalize the overwhelming events and pressures that we face daily.
