Set aside a small, fixed period to read, write, experiment, or speak with someone knowledgeable. Keep a question log rather than only a list of books. At the end of each week, record what became clearer, what became more confusing, and what evidence changed your view.

This routine turns an abstract ambition into an accumulating asset. The work may look modest on any individual day, but it compounds through better questions, stronger mental models, and a growing tolerance for uncertainty.

The home as a laboratory of questions

The same framework applies directly to raising children, but it does not require constructing a miniature university in the living room. The goal is not to make childhood relentlessly educational. It is to make inquiry visible and socially welcome.

A parent can read in front of a child, discuss ideas without pretending to know everything, and treat a child’s unusual question as an event rather than an interruption. A family can keep books within reach, visit libraries, follow interests across subjects, and let a child see adults persist through confusion.

Most importantly, adults can model the Hamming question in ordinary language. When a child complains about something, ask what makes it difficult. When they notice an unfair rule, ask what the rule is trying to accomplish. When they become fascinated by a topic, ask what the biggest unanswered question might be.

And the most reliable form of persistence is not stubbornly continuing along a predetermined path. It is returning, again and again, to the effort of finding a problem important enough to deserve continuation.
