The Durability Formula – How It Will Determine Your Startup’s Future Value
About Us
At [Company Name], our mission is to be the first call for founders who want to make history and to partner with them as company builders in pursuit of that goal. We believe in serving humanity with the tools at our disposal — people, technology, and capital — and we work with founders who share this compass.
Building a company is a long journey that demands courage to make difficult and sometimes unpopular decisions. We understand the challenges facing founders and have traveled this road many times. Our deep understanding allows us to serve founders and their teams, helping them navigate through the biggest challenges they encounter.
We never assume we have all the answers and take nothing for granted. Just like our founders, we are ambitious and know that winning requires passion, grit, and dynamic and orthogonal thinking that comes from diverse expertise and experience.
The Durability Formula
To capture long-term value, it is essential to design for durability from day one. The durability of your startup can be determined by the following factors: network effects, economies of scale, brand, embedding, and intellectual property (IP).
Network effects occur when one user makes the service more valuable for every other user. As your company gains traction and gets ahead, users won't find as much value in your competitors' smaller networks. Therefore, it is crucial to make your product or service a multi-player game, creating a network or marketplace that attracts users.
Consider whether the value of your product or service increases, decreases, or mostly stays the same as new users join the network. If your product offers increasing value with the addition of new users, it is more likely to sustain durability in the long run.
Having two different types of users who come to the network for different reasons and produce complementary value for the other side can further enhance durability. This taps into the tribal and emotional nature of Homo sapiens, who identify themselves with brands. By establishing a well-known brand identity, you can trigger psychological switching costs for users leaving your product or service for a lesser-known brand.
Embedding is another crucial factor for durability. By integrating your product or software into a customer's operations, you make it difficult for them to replace you with a competitor. Consider whether there are low or no costs to simultaneously using your product along with other competing products. If your product can act as a "database of record," it becomes an essential part of your customers' operations.
