"The Power of Orthogonality: Separating Content and Formatting with Markdown"

Introduction:
In a college class on engineering design, I learned about the concept of orthogonality. While I don't remember much from that course, one particular example has stuck with me. We were presented with two faucets and asked which one had a better design from a user interface perspective. The answer turned out to be the second faucet, as it allowed for independent control of two crucial elements - temperature and water quantity. This ability to adjust multiple factors independently is known as orthogonality.

Separating Content and Formatting with Markdown:
In a similar vein, when it comes to writing, it is beneficial to focus solely on the content and leave the formatting for later. One excellent tool that enables this approach is Markdown. Unlike traditional word processors, Markdown is a plain text format that allows for minimal formatting. You can use symbols such as "" or "*" to indicate headings or emphasize specific sections. While programs that render Markdown do exist, they are not as easy to manipulate for formatting as WYSIWYG editors. However, when it comes to writing, having an environment that allows for undivided attention is crucial. That's why I prefer writing in Markdown for most of my work.

Markdown is not the only option for content-focused writing. The key is to have a tool that allows you to concentrate solely on your writing, preserving your focus and attention. While WYSIWYG editors may be more suitable for documents that require extensive formatting, such as presentations or publications with numerous tables and figures, considering a tool that separates content and formatting is a valuable factor to contemplate.

The Power of Orthogonality in AI:
Moving beyond writing, orthogonality also plays a role in the field of artificial intelligence. The development of advanced AI models, such as ChatGPT and Claude, relies on reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). Both models share this foundation, but Claude stands out as a model that adheres to the 16 principles of ethical conversation (source: lifearchitect.ai). This emphasis on ethics sets Claude apart, as it aims to prioritize ethical considerations in its conversations.

Unique Insights:
According to Riley Goodside and Yann Dubois, two prominent figures in the field, Claude demonstrates some unique qualities compared to ChatGPT. Goodside mentions that Claude closely follows the requested content but may lack conciseness. On the other hand, Dubois highlights Claude's proficiency in delivering jokes. These insights showcase how AI models can possess unique characteristics and demonstrate the potential for further advancements in the field.

Actionable Advice:

  1. Embrace orthogonality in design: Whether it's a physical product or a digital interface, consider how you can design for orthogonality. By allowing users to independently adjust multiple elements, you can enhance the user experience and provide more control.

  2. Explore content-focused writing tools: Look beyond traditional word processors and consider tools like Markdown that separate content and formatting. By minimizing distractions and enabling focused writing, you can increase productivity and quality.

  3. Incorporate ethical considerations in AI development: As AI continues to advance, it is crucial to prioritize ethical concerns. Like Claude, aim to develop AI models that adhere to ethical principles and prioritize responsible conversation.

Conclusion:
Orthogonality, the ability to independently adjust multiple elements, holds value not only in physical design but also in writing and AI development. By separating content and formatting, tools like Markdown enable focused writing and enhance productivity. Furthermore, ethical considerations in AI development, as exemplified by Claude, pave the way for responsible and meaningful conversations. Embracing these concepts and utilizing suitable tools can lead to improved experiences and advancements in various fields.
