Success in Silicon Valley is a delicate balance of skill, luck, execution, and timing. However, at its core, it is all about the people. The ever-evolving nature of technology means that sometimes, young engineers can see opportunities that more experienced individuals may overlook. The key lies in working the problem and avoiding the destructive HiPPO anti-pattern.

In the world of startups, the connections we forge play a crucial role in our success. Often, the best opportunities come from co-workers or "weak connections" who may not hold a position of power or authority. As an angel investor, I believe in the strong, authentic connection between a founder and their product. Investing in someone means believing in their ability to solve a significant problem and their intelligence, trustworthiness, and ambition.

Throughout our careers, the networks we build shape our trajectory. Every school, job, and company presents an opportunity to connect with people. While we may not realize it at the time, each connection has the potential to add value to our career. Everyone we encounter can teach us something valuable.

Reflecting on my experience with Figma, a company I invested in nine years ago, and Dylan, who invested in my startup Daffy, I have come to understand that roles may change quickly, but relationships with good people endure for decades.

Looking beyond the world of startups, the concept of annotation emerges as a powerful tool for knowledge sharing. Back in 1993, as Eric Bina and I developed Mosaic, we recognized the value of allowing users to annotate all text on the web. We implemented a feature called "group annotations," enabling users to comment on any page and engage in discussions. Unfortunately, due to technical limitations at the time, we were unable to fully realize the potential of this concept.

However, the idea of annotating the world and creating an "Internet Talmud" has resurfaced over the years. Numerous projects have attempted to bring this vision to life, recognizing the immense value of adding new layers of knowledge to existing information.
