The Power of Giving People Control: A Solution for a Healthier Internet

In today's digital age, the internet has become an integral part of our daily lives. It has revolutionized the way we communicate, access information, and consume content. However, with the increasing dominance of social media platforms and the constant flood of information, concerns about the negative impact of the internet have also emerged.

One of the key issues that needs to be addressed is the power dynamic that currently exists. The internet, as it stands, is driven by a business model that sells people's attention to advertisers. This model incentivizes companies to prioritize content that manipulates people's emotions and captures their attention. This, in turn, leads to a lack of thoughtful, civil, and intellectually diverse discourse.

To create a healthier platform, we need to flip the power dynamic and give the people themselves the power to choose what they pay attention to. Instead of algorithms and moderators deciding what content users see, we should empower individuals to curate their own feeds. By implementing business models that allow people to choose to pay with money instead of attention, we can foster a more meaningful and engaging online experience.

But how do we ensure that this shift in power is effective? The answer lies in understanding and addressing the three big questions of marketing: How do you identify your target audience? Where can you find them? How do you engage them?

When we started KISSmetrics, we initially faced the challenge of identifying our target customer. We had a general audience in mind, but we quickly realized that our assumptions were not specific enough. To determine our marketing channel, we needed to identify a place of opportunity where we could listen, learn, and provide value.

This is where content marketing came into play. We wanted to create a tool that provided actionable metrics for marketers, so our marketing strategy had to be valuable for them. By focusing on content, making it interactive, and offering it for free, we were able to attract our target audience and scale our business rapidly.

One of the key tactics we employed was leveraging the power of hashtags on Twitter. In 2008, hashtags were still a relatively new concept, but they were gaining popularity. We discovered that by using hashtags like WeFollow and measure, we could easily gain new followers who were marketers. By sharing valuable marketing and analytics content, we were able to spread goodwill, promote great content, and build our own Twitter audience.

This brings us to the first actionable advice: identify underused opportunities in the selected platform. Just like Airbnb hacked Craigslist to promote their listings and Snapchat targeted popular high school students to spread their app, you need to identify emergent trends within tactics to engage with your target audience. Find one method that works and focus on a single channel at a time.

The second advice is to focus only on the users that matter. Not every follower or user is valuable to your business. Identify the ones who genuinely want to engage with you and prioritize your efforts accordingly. Don't waste your time on those who are not interested in what you have to offer.

Lastly, dish out massive doses of value and expect nothing in return. Understand your target customer, their pain points, and how your product or service solves their problem. Find out where your target audience hangs out, create a list of potential marketing channels, and vet them according to specific criteria. Then, engage with your customers using a method that allows for expansion while confining your reach only to the target audience. Aim to deliver a high amount of value in every interaction.

In conclusion, the internet needs better rules rather than stricter referees. By giving people the power to choose what they pay attention to, we can foster a more thoughtful, civil, and intellectually diverse online environment. By implementing business models that prioritize serving people over advertisers, we can create a platform that is truly beneficial for all. Remember to identify underused opportunities, focus on the users that matter, and consistently provide value. Only through these actions can we truly transform the internet into a healthier, more engaging space for all.
