The Changing Role of CTOs and the Importance of Building Strong Brands and Fan Communities
In today's rapidly evolving technological landscape, the role of a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) has undergone a significant transformation. No longer solely focused on technical expertise, CTOs are now expected to possess a wide range of leadership skills and a holistic perspective that enables them to guide the entire organization while remaining rooted in technology.
One of the most crucial behaviors expected of a CTO in this evolving landscape is the ability to drive the product validation cycle at an accelerated pace. As a "jack-of-all-trades," the CTO must engage in user interviews, accompany sales teams to gather customer feedback, take on the role of a tech lead, write a significant amount of code, and tirelessly work towards securing the necessary personnel to bring functionalities and designs to life.
During the early stages of an organization, when the product's form and market fit are still taking shape, the need to formalize specific systems or structures becomes less important. As long as the organization is functioning and the product's vision is becoming clear, the focus should be on understanding what the company is selling and who should be evaluated, what features are necessary, and how responsibilities should be divided.
Ironically, the stage when an organization is still small, with around 10 members, and about to scale up, is likely the most opportune time to address the organization's vision and the product's philosophy. To establish systems that can pervade even as the organization grows, it becomes essential to create a framework of mission, vision, and values. This can be achieved by engaging in discussions during management layers and company-wide retreats, aligning individual perspectives, and swiftly formalizing these discussions into actionable plans.
In the beginning, it is advisable to aim for a simple system. By establishing a basic organizational structure and evaluation framework, and implementing a culture of thorough one-on-one meetings, identifying problem areas becomes possible. Effective communication skills and the ability to convey intentions and goals in a way that team members can understand and agree with are incredibly valuable. Simply creating systems and policies will not motivate people to act; the key is to effectively communicate in a way that fosters accurate comprehension.
Ultimately, the pursuit of what should be created as a product is the first step towards ensuring the happiness of customers and employees alike. It is crucial to understand that consumers evaluate a product four times. Therefore, the ability to create a Concept that instills a desire to own and buy a product is essential. Additionally, Performance, the ability to make customers want to repurchase a product, is equally important.
It is vital to recognize that a customer's brand experience is not limited to a single moment but rather a continuous journey. This ongoing brand experience, referred to as TMOT (Total Moment of Truth), is continually overwritten and updated with each use of the product. Brand enthusiasts, in the form of organic user-generated content, consistently share their updated TMOT experiences, which then accumulate and impact ZMOT (Zero Moment of Truth).
ZMOT can be divided into two types: stimulation-based ZMOT, which flows through various platforms multiple times, and review-based ZMOT, which accumulates as stock, such as movie reviews on Yahoo! Movies. Fan influencers play a crucial role in both types of ZMOT, as they contribute to the dissemination and accumulation of these experiences.
To summarize, as CTOs adapt to their changing roles, it is essential to prioritize the ability to drive the product validation cycle swiftly. Simultaneously, organizations should focus on establishing a clear vision, mission, and values during their early stages, as these elements will serve as the foundation for scalable systems. Effective communication and the ability to convey intentions and goals in a way that team members can comprehend are vital in promoting employee motivation and understanding. Lastly, organizations must recognize the importance of creating strong brands and fan communities, as these communities contribute to the ongoing brand experience and impact consumer purchasing decisions.
