Postmodernity, Generative Tech, and the Quest for Meaning and Purpose

In an era of postmodernity, where traditional cultural values and narratives are being rejected, we find ourselves experiencing a cultural collapse. This collapse manifests as an "inward homelessness" within us, leaving us devoid of meaning and purpose. Culture, which has historically been the carrier of meaning and purpose across generations, is being disregarded, resulting in a diminishment of our identity.

A great society is characterized by its ability to pass on its culture from one generation to the next. This transfer of knowledge and values is what provides meaning and purpose to individuals within that society. However, when a generation no longer esteems its own heritage and fails to pass the torch to its children, it signifies that the foundational principles and experiences that shape the society are no longer considered valid.

Religious stories have played a significant role in shaping our culture and providing us with a sense of identity. However, in our rejection of these stories, we have failed to pass on the cultural elements that once gave us meaning and purpose. As a result, our identity has diminished, and we find ourselves in search of a new identity.

Similarly, in the realm of technology, we are witnessing a transformative shift with the emergence of generative tech. This technology is organized in a five-layer tech stack, with general AI models at the core. These models, such as GPT-3 and DALL-E-2, have the ability to generate text, images, videos, speech, and even games. They represent a breakthrough in technology and have far-reaching implications.

Specific AI models, on the other hand, are more specialized and capture nuances for specific tasks. They are trained on narrower, more specialized datasets and can perform tasks such as writing tweets, ad copy, song lyrics, and even generating e-commerce photos or 3D interior design images.

At the hyperlocal AI layer, we find even more specialized models. These models can write scientific articles in the preferred style of a specific journal or create interior design models tailored to an individual's aesthetic. They can even write code in the particular style of a company. This layer benefits from proprietary and trusted data, providing a unique advantage.

However, relying solely on data as a defense mechanism is not foolproof. Competitors can find similar datasets, and even if their models are slightly inferior, customers may not be able to discern the difference. Therefore, data network effects tend to asymptote over time. It is crucial to consider other factors beyond data to establish defensibility in the market.

In the realm of generative tech, the API layer or Generative OS plays a crucial role. It enables applications to access various AI models and allows for the interchangeability of these models. This layer has the potential to commodify AI models and will likely see the emergence of thousands of applications catering to different needs.

To succeed in this competitive landscape, it is essential to prioritize speed in product development, fundraising, and sales. Launching a feature and allowing the model to learn over time is often more effective than spending excessive time searching for specific data to build the perfect model. Perfectionism can hinder progress, and it is crucial to get the product in the market and iterate based on user feedback.

Aggressive sales strategies can help embed the product in the market, build network effects, and establish defensibility. By closely monitoring competitors and borrowing the best ideas, companies can stay ahead of the curve. Finding an investor who is willing to sprint alongside the company can provide the necessary support and resources for rapid growth.

In conclusion, postmodernity's rejection of culture has resulted in an inward homelessness, devoid of meaning and purpose. Similarly, the emergence of generative tech has disrupted traditional models of technology, requiring companies to adapt and prioritize speed, sales, and network effects. By understanding these shifts and embracing change, we can navigate this new landscape and find meaning and purpose in a postmodern world.
