The Changing Dynamics of Technology and Scarcity in a Digital World
"Not so trivial." During my studies, I’d learned a few interesting things that I’ve never ever really talked to someone about, and never tried to write them down — and now I wish I had those insights written down so that I could analyze them a bit more. I highly recommend scribbling down any spontaneous idea or thought — in an app editor, google docs file (you find your own suitable way) — but please do. You would never know how this idea could help you in the future or even might help to spark an even better idea. (note: This is what we do at Glasp).
"Software is Eating the World, Revisited." The world is organized around scarcity. Technology increases access to scarce things by helping us do more with less, allowing orders of magnitude more people to enjoy something for a fraction of the cost. Abundance inevitably leads to new forms of emergent scarcity that are hard to predict in advance. In a world of scarcity, supply constraints are paramount. In a world of abundance, demand is king.
In other words, capital and production are no longer the scarce resource — attention and loyalty are. Ben Thompson’s idea of aggregation theory captures this shift. Pre-internet, you captured profits by controlling supply. Post-internet, you capture profits by aggregating demand. Unbundling and rebuilding happens in every industry influenced by software. Songs get unbundled from CDs and then rebundled into playlists. Articles get unbundled from newspapers and then rebundled into social media feeds. Curation becomes more important. (note: Yes, curation becomes more important!)
Education, housing, healthcare, among others, are areas where technology will make a massive difference. In the world of bits, there are much fewer barriers to communicating, finding products, or getting work done — so the fundamental variable is not the unit of production or the unit of capital; it’s the unit of demand.
The digital era has brought about a paradigm shift in how we perceive scarcity and abundance. With technology enabling access to previously scarce resources, the focus has shifted from supply constraints to capturing attention and loyalty. This shift has given rise to the concept of aggregation theory, where profits are earned through aggregating demand rather than controlling supply. Industries affected by software are undergoing a process of unbundling and rebuilding, with curation becoming increasingly important.
The impact of technology extends beyond traditional sectors and into areas like education, housing, and healthcare. By leveraging technology, these industries can overcome barriers and provide greater accessibility and affordability to a wider audience. In a world where communication and access to products and services are easier than ever before, the key determinant of success lies in understanding and catering to the unit of demand.
In light of these insights, here are three actionable pieces of advice:
-
Embrace the power of curation: In a world flooded with information, the ability to curate and present relevant content is invaluable. Whether you're a content creator, marketer, or business owner, focus on delivering curated experiences that cater to the specific needs and preferences of your audience.
-
Prioritize user attention and loyalty: With attention becoming a scarce resource, it is crucial to build and maintain a loyal customer base. Invest in strategies that prioritize user experience, engagement, and satisfaction. By consistently delivering value and fostering a sense of loyalty, you can capture and retain the attention of your target audience.
-
Harness technology for greater accessibility: Look for opportunities to leverage technology to overcome barriers and provide greater accessibility to your products or services. Explore innovative solutions that can bridge gaps and reach a wider audience. By embracing technological advancements, you can tap into previously untapped markets and expand your reach.
In conclusion, the digital revolution has reshaped the dynamics of scarcity and abundance. Technology has enabled access to previously scarce resources, emphasizing the importance of attention and loyalty in a world of abundance. Industries are undergoing unbundling and rebuilding, with curation becoming a crucial factor for success. By embracing these changes and leveraging technology, businesses can thrive in a world where the unit of demand holds the key to success. So, start embracing the power of curation, prioritize user attention and loyalty, and harness technology for greater accessibility to unlock new opportunities in this digital era.
