Reflecting on My Failure to Build a Billion-Dollar Company: Good Things Come to Those Who Write
In today's society, wealth is often seen as the ultimate measure of success. We idolize billionaires like Bill Gates who have used their wealth to improve the well-being of others through philanthropy. However, it's important to recognize that wealth is not the only way to measure success, nor is it necessarily the best one. This realization hit home for me when I reflected on my own failure to build a billion-dollar company.
Instead of chasing after the elusive goal of becoming a product visionary and building a billion-dollar company, I shifted my focus to making Gumroad better for our existing creators. These creators were the ones who had kept us alive and supported us throughout the years. I realized that happiness is not about achieving monumental success, but rather about the expectation of positive change. Every year prior to 2016, I experienced an improvement in my expectations for the team, the product, or the company. However, that year felt like a step backward, and it made me reassess my priorities.
I made a conscious decision to prioritize our creators. They were our responsibility, and I wanted to ensure that we were delivering value to them. I didn't want to become a serial entrepreneur and risk disappointing yet another customer base. Instead, I saw the potential for growth by focusing on our existing creators, slowly buying back our investors, and building Gumroad into a meaningful business centered around our creators. I came to terms with the fact that we would never become a billion-dollar company, and surprisingly, it started to feel okay. Our thousands of creators selling on Gumroad didn't mind either.
This shift in mindset taught me an important lesson: no matter how amazing your product is or how fast you ship features, the market you're in will ultimately determine the majority of your growth. It's crucial to understand the needs and desires of your target audience and cater your offerings to meet those needs. I realized that I needed to focus on creating value rather than capturing it.
It was during this time of reflection that I discovered the power of writing. Looking back at the past three years of my career, I realized that all the good things that had happened to me were a result of writing. It all started with a simple habit of writing 1,000 words a day. This small act revolutionized my career and opened up new opportunities.
Writing is how you get attention in today's world, and attention is the most valuable resource. When you capture the attention of readers through your writing, you have the opportunity to promote something that will benefit them. Hundreds or even thousands of readers may end up purchasing what you're offering. It's a powerful way to connect with others and make a positive impact.
What I've learned is that good writing is about teaching. It's not about crafting perfect prose or impressing others with your writing skills. Instead, it's about sharing valuable knowledge and skills with your readers. Many successful writers didn't start out as experts in their field. They simply realized that they had valuable skills and started teaching them to anyone who wanted to listen. By focusing on teaching useful skills through writing, you can attract attention and create value for others.
In conclusion, my failure to build a billion-dollar company led me to a powerful realization: good things come to those who write. By prioritizing our existing creators and focusing on creating value for them, I found a sense of fulfillment and happiness that I had been missing. Writing became a transformative tool that allowed me to capture attention and make a positive impact. If you want to achieve success in today's world, consider the power of writing and the value it can bring to your life and the lives of others.
