The Science of Motivation: How to Get and Stay Motivated

Motivation is a crucial factor in achieving success and reaching our goals. However, it's not always easy to get motivated and stay motivated throughout the journey. As Lao Tzu famously said, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." In order to understand motivation better, let's explore the two types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic.

Intrinsic motivation is associated with doing what you love. When you are intrinsically motivated, the activity itself brings you pleasure and joy. This type of motivation is strongly correlated with sustained behavioral change and improved well-being. When you genuinely enjoy what you're doing, it's easier to stay motivated and committed to your goals.

On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is driven by external factors such as rewards, recognition, or pressure from others. If a behavior is valued by a manager, client, or friend, we may feel a sense of connectedness with them, leading to internalization of an extrinsic motivation. However, extrinsic motivation may not be as sustainable as intrinsic motivation. If the goals we set for ourselves do not align with our values and passions, it can be challenging to stay motivated in the long run.

Self-Determination Theory is a popular school of thought that highlights the importance of self-regulation in motivation. Self-regulation is the process of taking in social values and transforming them into our own values and self-motivations. This theory emphasizes the significance of relatedness in extrinsic motivation. When we feel a sense of connection with others who value our behavior, it becomes easier to internalize the motivation and sustain it.

Regardless of whether your motivation is intrinsic or extrinsic, having a clear aim is essential. Without a clear goal in focus, it's challenging to sustain motivation and stay on track. When you encounter a lull in momentum, it's crucial to get back on track as quickly as possible.

Now let's shift our focus to building capabilities before establishing moats in the business world. A moat refers to proven, perpetuating, and permanent unit economic advantages from peers within a competitive set. Before a company can establish a moat, it must first build capabilities that set it apart from others in the market.

Capabilities, also known as "powers," are intangible assets that enable a business to operate more effectively and earn returns above others in the market. They are the engines of competitive advantage and the most valuable assets of a company. Building capabilities is necessary to establish a moat or a moat trajectory.

Greenwald's perspective on competitive advantages includes customer captivity and resource captivity. The strength of these advantages depends on scale. Scale makes it easier and cheaper to acquire and retain customers or produce a product. Additionally, two other parameters for success are network effects and organizational design.

Network effects refer to the increasing returns to scale, where the value of a service or product increases as more users join. There are different forms of network effects, such as compatibility, standards, and protocols, customer network effects, endogenous data network effects, local network effects, user network effects, exogenous data network effects, and platform dynamics. Understanding and leveraging these network effects can significantly impact a company's competitive positioning.

Organizational design, amplified by the availability of venture capital, plays a crucial role in establishing competitive advantages. In the digital age, businesses are not limited by geographic territories. Winner-take-all dynamics are more feasible due to the lower costs of digital distribution. Small advantages in customer lifetime value (LTV) can generate globalized advantages over competitors, resulting in winner-take-all or winner-take-most dynamics.

When working with early-stage teams, it's important to identify the capabilities they are trying to build. These capabilities can be state-granted resources, patents, intellectual property, brand trademarks, or being the system of record. Whatever the capability may be, defining it is at the core of competitive strategy.

To conclude, here are three actionable pieces of advice to enhance motivation and build capabilities:

  1. Find Intrinsic Motivation: Identify activities that bring you joy and align with your passions. When you genuinely enjoy what you're doing, motivation becomes easier to sustain.

  2. Set Clear Goals: Establish clear and meaningful goals that align with your values and aspirations. Having a clear aim will help you stay motivated and focused throughout your journey.

  3. Understand and Leverage Network Effects: Explore different forms of network effects and how they can impact your business. By understanding and leveraging these effects, you can enhance your competitive positioning and build capabilities effectively.

Remember, motivation and building capabilities are ongoing processes. Stay dedicated, adapt to changes, and embrace continuous growth. With the right mindset and strategies, you can achieve your goals and establish a lasting competitive advantage.
