The Deterioration of Attention: How Big Tech is Stealing our Focus

In today's fast-paced digital age, it seems that our attention spans are getting shorter and shorter. We find it increasingly difficult to focus on one task for an extended period of time, constantly being bombarded with distractions from our smartphones, social media, and the internet as a whole. But is this decline in attention solely due to our own personal shortcomings, or is there something more at play?

According to author and journalist, Ethan Zuckerman, our attention has not collapsed, but rather, it has been stolen from us by the big forces in the tech industry. In his book, Zuckerman explores the effects of this attention theft on both an individual and societal level. He argues that a society that cannot collectively pay attention to its problems is a society that cannot solve its crises.

But how exactly is our attention being stolen? The answer lies in the business model of big tech companies like Facebook. When we use these platforms, we are not their customers, but rather, their product. Our every move is tracked and analyzed in order to build a profile of us, which is then used to serve us targeted ads. This constant surveillance and manipulation of our attention is detrimental to our ability to focus and achieve our goals.

One area where this loss of focus is particularly evident is in our sleep patterns. Numerous studies have shown that lack of sleep leads to a decline in attention. And with only 15 percent of Americans waking up feeling refreshed, it's clear that we are not getting the rest we need to maintain our focus. This lack of focus is then further exacerbated by the content we consume, which is increasingly designed to be attention-seeking and clickbait-y.

"The medium is the message," as Marshall McLuhan famously said. We start to resemble our dominant tools of communication, and this is true for the platforms we use as well. The way we engage in politics has become a reflection of TV and the internet, driven by commercial incentives. We are a divided and diverted population, unable to mobilize in defense of anything.

So, what can we do to reclaim our attention and combat this mass distraction? First and foremost, we need to recognize the power dynamics at play. The tech industry wants us to believe that the debate is about being pro-tech or anti-tech, but the real question is what kind of tech we want and whose interests it should serve. We need to demand a business model that is not premised upon discovering the weaknesses in our attention to sell it to the highest bidder.

Secondly, we can look to alternative business models that prioritize our attention over profit. Subscription-based platforms like Netflix and HBO have proven successful in providing quality content without the constant bombardment of distractions. Additionally, we can consider a model where we collectively own the platforms we use, similar to a sewer system. Just as we all paid to build sewers to improve public health, we can collectively invest in platforms that prioritize our well-being.

Lastly, we must prioritize product development over diversification. Google, for example, has been criticized for engaging in disparate product development efforts in different industries and markets. By focusing on improving and innovating their current products, they can ensure profitability and strategic alignment before venturing into new businesses.

In conclusion, our deteriorating attention spans are not solely a result of our own shortcomings, but rather a consequence of the mass distraction manufactured by big tech. We must recognize the power dynamics at play and demand a business model that prioritizes our attention and well-being. By incorporating alternative models and focusing on product development, we can reclaim our attention and solve the crises that plague our society.
