"A Comprehensive Survey of Product Management: Insights and Strategies for Success"

In the world of product management, there are certain skills and qualities that are highly valued and sought after. Communication, execution, and product sense are among the most frequently valued attributes of a successful product manager. On the other hand, design/UX, empathy, and raw intelligence are deemed to be least frequently valued. However, it is important to note that these values may vary depending on the company and its specific needs.

One interesting finding from our research is that product managers tend to have more influence than other functions in only 70% of companies, compared to the 80% or above in other roles. This spectrum of influence ranges widely, from companies like Zynga where product managers run the show, to Apple where they have the least influence. This suggests that the level of influence a product manager has within a company is not solely determined by their skillset, but also by the organizational culture and structure.

Another key aspect of product management that we explored is retention. Retention curves can take various shapes, including flattening curves, declining curves, and smile curves. When a product truly stands out, its retention curve actually rises. This is because during the hyper-growth stage, users who have churned due to product development or network effects come back and re-engage with the product. The slope-shaped characteristics of retention curves are typically the result of product feature releases, news, or other events that impact the overall usage. Vertical-shaped characteristics are commonly seen in subscription-based businesses that offer annual plans or trial versions.

Understanding the engagement of the most important users, often referred to as "superusers," is crucial in improving overall retention. These superusers are the ones who consistently show high levels of engagement and, as a result, have the highest retention rates. By grasping how this group interacts with the product, product managers can implement strategies to enhance retention as a whole.

Conducting an investigation into the decline in the number of users at each stage can also be beneficial in understanding the effectiveness of acquisition channels, whether paid or free. It can also help identify any issues that may exist within the registration or onboarding process. This data-driven approach allows product managers to make informed decisions and optimize their strategies for acquiring and retaining users.

Based on our findings, here are three actionable pieces of advice for product managers:

  1. Focus on improving communication skills: Since communication is one of the most frequently valued qualities of a product manager, honing this skill will help you effectively convey your ideas, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and align stakeholders towards a common goal.

  2. Pay attention to user retention: Understanding the factors that contribute to retention curves and identifying superusers can provide valuable insights for product managers. By investing in strategies that enhance user engagement and satisfaction, you can improve overall retention rates.

  3. Embrace a data-driven approach: Analyzing the decline in user numbers at each stage and evaluating the effectiveness of acquisition channels will help you optimize your acquisition and onboarding processes. By leveraging data, you can make informed decisions and continuously improve your product's performance.

In conclusion, product management is a multifaceted role that requires a combination of skills, from strong communication and execution abilities to a deep understanding of the product and its users. While certain qualities may be more frequently valued than others, it is important for product managers to adapt and tailor their strategies based on the unique needs of their company and users. By focusing on effective communication, user retention, and data-driven decision-making, product managers can thrive in their role and drive the success of their products.
